Guest guest
Does mitochondrial disease cause bad teeth? My son, who is five and has suspected mito, has a broken molar. It looks like there was a small pit there, I had seen it before, but I just happened to look in there today and one side of the molar is broken off. He also has quite a few small brown pits in his other molars. We brush twice a day, use a fluoride treatment, drink mostly water, and he doesn't even like sweets! The only meds he takes is Carnitor. He also has no enamel on his two bottom teeth. Could that also be related to the mito? Something else I've been wondering...I've heard that many mito children have high arched palates. Devin does for sure! Does that sound familiar to anyone else? e *Ü*

Guest guest
Maddie has an extremely high arched palate! Her teeth are very crowded, but that’s about it. Holly Re: Mito and bad teeth? Guest guest
Thanks Stacey. Did you know that the high palate was part of the mito? All my son's doctors know about it, but none ever said it's related to the mito. I thought that was quite interesting. e Re: Mito and bad teeth? Guest guest
Yep, Devin has that high arched palate and crowded teeth too. The dentist is financing his next vacation from my son's dental work alone! Ugh! Thanks for your help. I appreciate it. e Re: Mito and bad teeth? Guest guest
> e *Ü* Our dentist does believe the mito causes bad teeth in that the chemical balance that is required to form the enamel properly is sometimes affected. Evidently the enamel is a delicate balance of crystaline structures which are formed while you are very young. Some the doctors don't think mito makes a difference. Our son has very " soft " teeth and we have to watch for cavities. Also he was taking a medicine which caused him to throw up a lot when he had his baby teeth. Stomach acid is very hard on teeth!! We have had many teeth pulled, many teeth capped, many teeth filled. In addition to the bad teeth, my son has a small jaw. I think he only lost 2 teeth the normal way. All the rest had to be taken. Guest guest
I would say yes teeth and mito go hand in hand. My son Josh age 8 just had over $4000.00 dollars of dental work done, we have no dental ins nor do we have state help anymore. He had to have 7 teeth pulled they were decaying very badly, and cap the rest of his teeth so he could even eat. He dose not have any enamel on his teeth, has been on a basic cocktail for several years. And a seizure med. as well since age 2. I had sent a question to the MDA web site on this topic and it came back with the polling in the mouth, and they also said with this disease, some kid's cant fight off a certain bacteria that is in their mouth. Therefore bad teeth. I hope this has helped. Patty and son Josh
Guest guest
Hi, I have been putting off taking to the dentists cause I am afraid of how she will react. How do the dentists do it with kids who have been through so much already? Do they put them to sleep? I mean I hate the dentist I cant imagine how Niki will handle the dentist. Besides the fact it takes three of us to hold her down just when her tube needs to be changed. One more question...are any of you having problems with the NG tube the mickey tube. It seems that Nikis' stomach acids are eating the ballon portion. IT is causing the tube to stick out way to much as if it is going to fall. I just saw the surgeon the other day and he was amazed at the stomach acids eating her ballon the way it did. But he assured me the tube would be fine. However it is still sticking out bad. Anyway have any ideas? s mom complex one
Guest guest
My son's stomach acids wore down the balloons also. We were changing it daily. Finally they put a Bard in. It's just like a mickey, but you don't have to deal with the balloon. It is a bar that keeps it in place. It only has to be changed once a year. The GI doc is the one who changes it. This had worked out great for us. Re: Mito and bad teeth? > > Hi, > I have been putting off taking to the dentists cause I am afraid of how she will react. Guest guest
I have 2 pegged teeth (capped) and my front teeth are so badly cracked (verticle cracks from bottom to top) that my dentist said if they were to be pulled, they would likely be in 5 or 6 pieces each... just last night i was eating a piece of toast, and a decent sized chip came off my front tooth... I just assumed i had weaker teeth, but never related it to anything else... > I would say yes teeth and mito go hand in hand.
