Dear Group,

I have reviewed abstracts for 29/32 of the Aetna references from:

http://www.aetnaushc.com/cpb/data/CPBA0157.html

Of these 29, I can only find 2 that are relavent to BPD or BPD/DS.

#1: Grimm IS, Schindler W, Haluszka O. Steatohepatitis and fatal

hepatic failure after biliopancreatic diversion. Am J Gastroenterol

1992;87:775 - 79.

This abstract presents a SINGLE case of hepatic failure. Use of a

single case seems to me to be innapropriate in proving a lack of

safety or effectiveness.

#2: Fisher BL, Barber AE. Gastric bypass procedures. Eur J

Gastroenterol Hepatol 1999 Feb;11(2):93 - 7.

The abstract discusses general reasons why the authors feel that RNY

is the preferred method. I would like to get the entire article if

possible to see if anything important is in there.

THRE papers I could not find on Medscape:

#1: Scopinaro N, Gianetta E, Friedman D et al. Biliopancreatic

diversion for obesity. Problems Gen Surg 1992;9:362 - 79.

This one is way out of date. I have read the modern papers by

Scopinaro, and they are very positive towards BPD.

#2: Forestieri P, De Luca M, Formato A, Loffredo A, et al.

Restrictive versus malabsorptive procedures: criteria for patient

selection. Obes Surg 1999 Feb;9(1):48 - 50.

------- CAN SOMEBODY HELP ME WITH THIS ONE, COULD BE IMPORTANT ----

#3: 16th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Bariatric

Surgery. San Diego, California, USA. June 9 - 12, 1999. Abstracts.

Obes Surg 1999 Apr;9(2):123 - 44.

Don't have this one either, but the probably just repeat the ASBS

standard line.
