Guest guest
Dr Natasha McBride is a supporter of SCD but she allows Bifidus. The following is Dr. Natasha McBride's response to why she has allowed Bifidus in her GAPS diet when it is not allowed on SCD. (GAPS stands for Gut and Psychology Syndrome and its dietary protocol is based on SCD with differences that have grown out of Dr. McBride's experience and research.) Please note her friendship with Elaine. It can be found at www.gaps.me. I post it in the interests of clarification and further information. It shows that Elaine was quite open about not knowing much about probiotics other than that acidophilus worked. It also makes a very pertinent point in that the knowledge on probiotics has moved on greatly in the last decead or so.............................. On SCD sites they say that Elaine Gottschall did not recommend any probiotics apart from L. acidophilus, she particularly did not recommend Bifidus. You use many other strains of probiotic bacteria. Why? This is a very common question. I was privileged to have a professional friendship with Elaine. We have emailed on many subjects regularly. I am sure she would forgive me for publishing some of our correspondence in order to clarify the issue of probiotics. This is what she said to me in her email on the 16th of November 2004: " As for probiotics, I have divorced myself from this subject. I have been getting calls from numerous companies to OK their probiotics. Since I am far from an expert in this field, I cannot get involved. All I know is that L. acidophilus is tried and tested and has withstood the test of time.… I am turned off by the highly commercial approach to these supplements. All I know is diet and I cannot bear to think these parents are being exploited by one company after another. Surely, these children do not need all these supplements when they are on SCD. " More on 18th of November 2004: " Yes, the probiotics are necessary although some have gotten well without them. But Dr Sidney V Haas used them – I believe it was only L acidophilus. Actually his book casts some scepticism on bifidus overgrowth and that is why I have advised people to not use it. But we don't have all the answers and there is much work to be done. " Since the times of Dr Haas we have learned a lot more about probiotics; and I have tried to inform myself as much as possible on this subject. Based on my knowledge and clinical experience I use many different strains of probiotic microbes in treating my patients.

Steve, Since the topic of the GAPS diet comes up regularly on SCD lists, I purchased and read a copy of Dr. NCM's book. I found it to be well-organized, and quite interesting. I respect her knowledge and her opinions. However, I stand by what Elaine said because I have seen too many people (including myself) get sick from ingesting bifidus in yogurt or supplementation. Since this is an SCD list, my recommendations will continue to be those of SCD, not GAPS. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
Hi, folks.... I think Amelia inadvertently posted this to both lists. There's an individual who recently began posting on the SCD-UK list who is... abrasive, to say the least. I've requested the assistance of the SCD-UK moderator, as I'm getting pretty tired of her numerous personal attacks. This group, BTVC-SCD, manages pretty well at being polite and respecting other's opinions and observations. It takes more than a moderator to make a community -- it takes people who work together with a common goal. BTVC-SCD is dedicated to helping people begin their journey to health through the Specific Carbohydrate Diet as delineated in Elaine Gottschall's Breaking the Vicious Cycle. <grin> We do wander off topic from time to time, what with sleep apnea, and LDN, and coping with doctors or family who don't understand SCD. But for the most part, we do pretty well. I want to thank the other moderators and regular posters who keep things rolling along. Above all, I want to thank all of the members who help make this Forum our on-line SCD home. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
