I happened to tune into Montel as I was channel surfing from my recumbent bike in my gym at home -- just getting back to exercising, eight weeks post-op -- and caught the magic words like " Carnie " and " obesity. " Basically, Montel was sucking up to her and her male-friend (who was smart enough to sit there and keep his mouth shut) as well as her doctor and playing up the doctor's web site " http://www.spotlighthealth.com (I checked it, and it is almost totally devoted to film clips and dialog of Carnie's journey through WLS). And, with tear-jerking more fit for Oprah than Montel, Carnie was praised to the heavens for saving so many lost souls through her web page and the fact that SHE ACTUALLY PARTICIPATES IN THE ON-LINE SUPPORT GROUP AND REGULAR PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND I CAN EVEN TALK TO CARNIE (wow, mama, git me my keyboard! quick now!). I don't know if she was embarrassed by this treacle, or if she was actually digging it, but it was being laid out real thick. Of course, to a MO naif looking in on this world of WLS for the first time, it may have been just what was needed to get the brain cells oriented to the surgery. Anyway, my 30 minutes were up at about the time that Montel's credits started to flash across the screen, and I went over to my weight machine. After exercising, and back at my computer and on " Carnie's web page (http://www.spotlighthealth.com ), I could not get Real Player to work on the film clips, so i read the dialog of her first consult with the doc. I cringed when he went over the alternatives to RnY. Something to the effect of, " of course there are things like the VBG and duodenal switch, but for you the Roux en Y is the best choice. " (Now, this is from memory, and he may not have said it exactly that way.) Point is that she barely appeared to understand the RnY during that first consult (lots of " um's " and " uh-huh's " from her mouth), and he dismissed other choices just by naming them and not even explaining what they were. Oh well, just one post-op's jaded and jaundiced views. --Steve --
Guest guest
Reading Steve's post about Carnie's doctor and how he pushed the RNY without really discussing the plus/minus of the other surgeries avaiable makes me really appreciate Dr. Booth in MS. When I went in for my consult, I went prepared for the DS because I had done my homework. However, there were those there who had not. The PCP had simply sent them for WLS consult. Dr. Booth has made a video that you watch (as a group) that goes into detail about the different surgeries and what you can expect with each. THEN he comes in and discusses AGAIN and answers the group's questions. And ONCE AGAIN he talks to you one on one about which surgery you think is best for you and why....He spends all the time you need to make sure that you understand everything. I really appreciate a doctor who involves the patient in the decision so much!! After all...this is MY life and MY body. Guest guest
Hi Steve, Thanks for briefing us on Carnie's visit with Montel. I guess I'm not that broken up about missing it after all!! LOL!!! You know, it seems to me that I heard somewhere a ways back that she was regretting not having the DS done...........oh well, I'm sure that was all rumor. Whatever. Anyway, thanks for sharing your views. Personally, I don't really understand what the big deal is. Yes, she's a celebrity, but so what? She was MO just like the rest of us, and she had surgery just like the rest of us. The end. Okay, sorry, now that's MY "jaded and jaundiced" views!! Ha! Ha!! So, how's the exercise coming?
