snacks?

I'm a new member of this group. I have Crohn's and have been doing SCD for

about 3 weeks. So far, I'm seeing definite improvement in my symptoms. I did

have a question:

Any good ideas for quick, portable snacks? My go to snacks have been cheese,

dates, apples. I tend to have high cholesterol though, so I'd like to cut back

a bit on my cheese intake. I haven't introduced almond flour yet, and have also

cut out peanut butter as of last week.

Thanks :)

you're lucky you can tolerate dates and apples already! What about strawberries?? Those are a great quick snack and if you can eat apples you should do well with strawberries. I know I can eat them ok. Quick snack for me is you steam as many carrots as you can. Then melt butter on them, put some nutmeg and cinnamon on them, and pack them in containers.. Great go to snack just heat them up.Another is the cheesecake. I make it very often (2 at a time) and put 2 cut up bananas in before I bake it. REALLY good and quick snack. You could also try plain pork rinds with only salt added... but they are as advanced as peanut butter is so maybe hold off on that? Whatever you think is best really.Hope this helps!-UC - 1+ yearsSCD - 7 months 100% strict and 4 months restricted diet.Asacol - 5 pills a dayTo: BTVC-SCD From: lrduni@...Date: Mon, 25 Jan 2010 02:25:56 +0000Subject: snacks?

Irduni,Are you vegetarian? If not, boiled eggs make a great snack and the natural lecithin will help with the cholesterol--actually a lot of the natural fats in nuts and avocados are very good. Dates with a walnut stuffed inside is a good snack. Fruit smoothies in an insulated thermos or travel cup is good too -- make it with the yogurt and fruit (chilled, cooked down fruit enhances the fruit flavor -- berries, pineapple, etc.) a banana, and slip in a 1/4 of avocado or coconut oil, and maybe some orange juice. It is a lovely flavor. Mint will really liven up the taste as well. You might need a dehydrator for these, but fruit leathers and beef jerky are good too. My go-to snack was hard boiled eggs (they stay good at room temp for several

days), grilled chicken breasts, ripe bananas and ripe avacados. I didn't mind

eating the chicken room temp, cold, or hot so that worked really well for me

too. You're very early into the diet so be careful eating too much raw and

advanced foods; they can really impede your healing (I'm giving you this advice

from first-hand knowledge). Anything raw or dried is considered advanced so are

nuts, nut butters and nut flour goodies. 2 years into the diet, and I can hardly

eat anything nut related. I made the yummiest casserole yesterday and ate about

1/4 of it. The topping had nut flour and about an hour after I ate it, I had

symptoms (bloating mostly; I looked prego).

Good luck!!!

My standard food to take with me when I am out on errands is:

chicken/turkey slices

apples

carrots

almond butter and a knife to slather it on the apple and carrot slices

water

I used to take salad but I'm generally eating in the car and salad

can get awfully messy.

Yes, of course I make my own! I roast chickens and I roast turkeys

and then I slice them up and freeze the slices separately and put

them in the freezer in big plastic bags so I can grab what I

want. It's not deli meat by any means, regular type slices.

What kind of turkey do you buy? I can't find any that doesn't have broth added to it?

Try a place like Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, or Sprouts. My local grocery

(Basha's) also has legal turkey. I've never found legal turkey (or chicken) at

places like Walmart.
