Eight days to go and I was wondering: is there a chance I could avoid oil

slicks, sprays & all that good stuff if I try to keep my " diet " post-op as

fat free as possible? Any other recommendations?

In my experience, you cannot totally avoid, but you can mitigate

somewhat, especially early into the process. If you find that you

do spray or leak, you may want to use some maxi-pads, concentrating on

the proper anatomical depression, if you get my drift (i.e.,

" cover your ass " definitely applies in this instance).

YMMV.

Any other recommendations?

Get some acidophilus culture. Better yet, get some

acidophilus that actually has mixed cultures of L.

Acidophilus, L. Bulgaris, and one or two others whose names i

forget. These help to re-populate " good " bacteria in

your gut. They can significantly cut down on intestinal

distress. I know that you can get them in Fresh

Fields/Whole Foods. Solgar brand is about $19. You can get

them much more cheaply in Trader Joe's (around $3), but I do not

know if TJ's is a mixed culture.

Go get 'em, Marcia!

It is not a given that you will have oil leakage. My perception has

been that the vast majority of DS patients do not get this particular

maladay, and those that do usually see it resolve itself fairly

quickly.

You might want to check the archives of the DS_PostOp_Problems

mailing list to read past discussions of this and what was done by

the people that did have the problem:

Why avoid it when you don't even know if you are someone that it will happen

too??? You may be lucky like many of us and have very controllable bms while

eating very flavorful high fat food! I had an oil problem once very early

preop and never again. The only other accommodations I make are that I carry

ozium in my purse and burn candles in my bathroom. I feel this is a small

price to pay for eating anything I want (keeping in mind protein first) and

maintaining my weight!
