Guest guest
Teri, I have tried Xenical myself. I personally wanted WLS to be my LAST resort so I tried Atkins and then Xenical. To put it simply, Xenical just doesn't cut it if you are MO. The typical weight loss is only 10 lbs. Atkins diet works better, except that the excess protien was getting into my kidney and causing havoc. What really bothers me is that the same insurance companies/doctors that demand you take this stuff are the same ones that refuse to cover its costs. If you push them they will tell you that the stuff doesn't work long term. OK, fine, neither did phen-phen. So why are the pushing us to take this stuff. Seems to be a stalling tactic to me. Perhaps the only benifit to trying Xenical is that its side effects are somewhat similar too (but much milder) DS. Guest guest
I was just reading an article that my OB/GYN sent me telling how bad these drugs are for women, and how it makes them more inclined to have heart attacks! Maybe you should ask your doctor about that!? dina Dina in Aloha, OR Age 37/BMI 61 Waiting for my consult with Dr. Hoping my new insurance will cover it all.... -----Original Message----- From: lookn2bthin@... Guest guest
Let' see. There exists a drug that produces one of the least pleasant possible side effects of DS; i.e. uncontrolled oily anal discharge, flatulance, ugly odor, etc. and only delivers an average 10 to 20 pound weight loss. Couple that with the fact that you would have to spend money for this rather expensive drug every day for the rest of your life and join the ranks of long term research subjects like all those who are now sufferring the heart damage from Phen-Fen with out the weight loss. I considered the option and passed it by with the blessing of my very conservative family doctor(not the doc who did my surgery). She pointed out the fact that BPD is really a variation of ulcer surgeries that have a 60 plus year history. The unwanted side effect of an inability to maintain normal body weight after these radical ulcer surgeries is what led to the development of WLS. How to manage the long term problems from the surgery has already happened. Since I am not willing to volunteer to be the next guniea pig for the drug industry, I chose surgery and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Guest guest
> my dr wants me to try xenical as a last diet attempt.has anyone been > told the same? I asked my PCP for Xenical when I was waiting to see my dS surgeon. I thought that the insurance company would deny me, because I did not have 3 " supervised " diet attempts in the last two years (or whatever it was). I figured that they would not accept the fact that my PCP had watched my weight due to diabetes for most of that time. So my PCP wrote a scrip for Xenical, which I filled. Please note - I never took any of it. By the time the insurance was submitted I had been " on " Xenical for 3 months, I think. It may have helped me to get approval, but i am not sure of that. And my PCP never questioned why I didn't lose weight, since diabetics often have a harder time losing anyway. If you think the lack of supervised attempts might hinder your insurance approval, maybe it's a good idea to get it into your medical records. Ellen DS 2/14/01 310 Dr. Anthone 7/10/01 241 - 69 lbs.
