Guest guest
Your mom was a very resourceful person! As for the worms...still a no-go for me. I don't like bugs or any slithering creatures (snakes, worms, etc.) of any kind. I guess they would be a last resort for me if I was starving to death!!!Blessings,BeckyRose wrote: Well, Becky, the worms do add nutrition. Remember, I'm the person who ate (and liked!) mealworm stir-fry! I found out as an adult that my mother used to pick cockroaches out of the flour when we lived in Arizona. My dad was off work a lot & Mom worked as a waitress, which didn't really provide enough for a family of five. There were no food stamps, etc. back then. When things were really bad, she would go to the priest at our church & get maybe $5. My mom was expert at stretching her resources. I had an uncle with 5 kids who had a habit of showing up at suppertime. Mom might have had enough ground beef to make each of us a hamburger, but she would just brown it all with some onions, add milk & flour (without the roaches!) to make a big pot of gravy, and we would have bread with gravy on it. I never really noticed or cared, because I was happy to see my cousins, but Mom told me that one time my brother , who was 4 yrs. older than me, very loudly asked, "Why does Uncle Gene always come & eat our food?" Uncle Gene got insulted & left, but I guess it didn't last long. One time we were broke; my dad was going to be paid on Monday for a sign painting job, but on Friday we had almost nothing to eat. Then some friends showed up with a big box of zucchini and we ate zucchini all weekend. Mom fried it, made pancakes with it, whatever she could think of. My dad would never eat any kind of squash after that, for the rest of his life. I think it was the fact that he hadn't been able to provide for his family & he just couldn't stand the reminder. Well, didn't mean to go on for so long. Guess I need to earn my nickname! Guest guest
You should always put broccoli, cauliflower or brussel sprouts in salted water and let it sit for a bit so that it kills the worms. Then you drain it and rinse it well and then cook it. Hope this helps. KatGet a sneak peak of the all-new AOL.com.
Guest guest
My dad was disabled and there were nine kids so we also had the hamburger gravy over bread. I still like to have it once in a while but now we substitute potatoes(for mu hubby). And we had stewed tomatoes with crackers, tomato sandwiches, and stretched chili with tomato juice and macaroni. We tried growing broccoli once and they 'looked' great but once you boiled them all these worms came to the surface. Nobody could eat it. It looked like broccoli worm soup! gross... I love broccoli but cook it and see what happens first. hugs S.Rose wrote: Well, Becky, the worms do add nutrition. Remember, I'm the person who ate (and liked!) mealworm stir-fry! Guest guest
, we used to have "fat gravy" and "skinny gravy." The skinny gravy was made with dried beef that came in a little jar. The fat gravy had the ground beef. Once when my kids were all small & we were low on money, I decided to make some hamburger gravy. I remembered that I had saved some beef broth in the freezer & decided to add it. I have a bad habit of putting stuff in the freezer without labeling it, thinking that I will recognize it later. Well, the broth looked a little orange, but I didn't think much of it & added it to the gravy. As it cooked, it smelled good but different. Then when we started eating, my husband said, "This gravy tastes like pumpkin!" I remembered that I had saved some extra pumpkin pie filling! He went ahead & ate it, but I fried some Spam for the kids & me. I still get reminded of that, nearly 30 years later, only the kids tell everybody that I made them eat it. Guest guest
, this is one thing I can't blame on sarc; this was at least 15 years before my lymph node biopsy & I was quite healthy.
