Here is the letter from Mike C about his diet!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Hi

Thanks for replying, its great to hear from you....yep its been quite a journey for me in the regard of getting well again (knock on wood)...the Allergist ( Dr. Scharffin)in Vancouver, simply tested me for food allergies and came up with a bunch, it was news to me that I was allergic to any foods, because I ate anything and everything I could, his idea was, that because I had tried the " Lemonade Diet " no food for 12 days except for the lemonade drink, and my RP simply went away, that obviously " something " must have done it. I have to say that while it was not a 'blind study' I had never felt that good in my life. No chest pains, no burning ears, no sore nose, nothing. But as I returned to eating again, bingo..the RP returned, with a vengence. I'm not about to say that it was totally the food, but I have no idea what 'turned the RP off " at that time..Maybe I 'starved it to death' for the time being.???

Anyway, it turns out I am 'allergic' to....

FOODS: Halibut, wheat, goat's milk, peas, corn, rice, (wild rice is OK) eggs, milk,(soy is Ok) yeast, sugar, potato, (sweet potatos OK ) tomato, pork, chocolate

INHALANTS: Dust, cotton, bird feathers, molds

ANIMALS: Dog ( psssst dont' tell Sasha (my beagle) that lol

POLLENS: Trees, grasses and weeds of the Pacific Northwest, go figure, and I live in a rainforest.

I eat a bread and it has no wheat or yeast, kinda tastes like 'cardboard'. :-)

It may look like they is nothing left to eat, but that is not the case, you just have to be creative. Salads, etc beans, anything but the above list right. Now I had to stay off these foods for 3 months and see what happened, and as I told you...all the pain in my chest disappeared, my ears stopped burning, thank god. No stiffness in my joints, AND my peak flow increased by 50 so its now at 350 or slightly above. It was always at a constant 300. With a 90% closed left stem main bronchus, I'll take any improvement I can get, especially in that area. I am to re-introduce the foods (one at a time) above and see what happens, and then through the process of elimination, I can find the one that really causes my RP to 'act up'.... I'll let you know how I am making out...its a journey of discovery.

.If I have anything to say to anyone with RP, I have suffered with this 'dis-ease' for 8 years and if the food has anything what-so-ever to do with it, then I am all for NOT eating it. I thought to myself as I left his office.. " What have I got to lose, but some weight " ...I have tried all the drugs, pred, dapsone, methotrexate, and yes the Pred to me was a 'life saver' but if I never see another 55 mgs again, I'll be a happy camper. That's it in a nutshell (not peanut) :-).... It would have been so nice to meet everyone at the get together. Everyone is in my thoughts, always. I pray for all of us with this, and I only hope I can keep it away from me. Stay in touch....til then...be safe.

Re: Disability

Hi Mike,

I'm sooooo happy that you are doing so well. Glad the diet is working. Tell me again what the allergist found that you were allergic to? I want to post it to the group and let them know too.

I am also very happy to read that you are starting a new career. I'm so proud of you. Good luck with it!!!!!!!!

I finally met a lot of the people from our RP group. We just had a get together in Oklahoma and I got to meet so many wonderful people. Mike, I finally met Angie!!! She's the greatest. Tough as hell, but she's a doll. I'll send you a pic of us when I get my film developed.

Keep me updated on your progress Mike. I'm so very happy for you. Also, be sure to send me a post on your allergies so I can send it to the group.

I'm going to talk to my doc about that too. Hey, if it works for you, it can work for me.

Congrats Mike, I'm so happy for you.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I have been in remission for quite some time here and have decided to go off my disability pension and return to work.....I start a program called Career Development Practitioner (Career Counsellor) next Sat the 8th. It's in Vancouver and will mean lots of travelling back and forth by plane and ferry..but that's Ok, it will be real test of my stamina, the program will finish on June the 4th, 2002...but after seeing the allergist and stopping the foods I was eating, I have to say that the pains in my chest have stopped altogether. Amazing how it happened but it did...and I'm not questioning it one bit. I'll take what ever comes my way. Perhaps the foods I was eating was making the RP worse, I have no idea, but if that was the case then so be it. I have tried it all in the past ...DISCLAIMER!!WE ARE NOT MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS, THEREFORE ANY INFORMATION THAT IS RECEIVED HERE IS FROM EXPERIENCE ONLY. PLEASE CONSULT WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE TRYING ANYTHING THAT IS SUGGESTED. WE ARE NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR YOUR PHYSICIAN AND ARE NOT TRYING TO BE. Hi all. I have an idea of why this diet might be working for Mike and why it also might work for others too. When my son was young he was pretty ill. We took him to a clinic in Oklahoma City operated by a Dr. Philpot. Dr. Philpot explained things this way...

if you break a bone that area becomes weak. Any time you have an allergic reaction to something it affects that weak area. The same thing applies to any other damaged or weak area of your body. My theory is, if our weak areas are those affected by the RP any allergic reaction could trigger or compound a flair.

This is very interesting!! I do have allergies, but very little to food and I don't eat what I'm allergic to. But I am allergic to grasses, dust a few other things. It's funny I already know of the lemonade diet. I used it to get rid of an ulcer in my esophogus when I was about 20. It worked too! I was amazed because docs tell you no citrus, but my dad was an ulcer sufferer and swore by it. You see the high sodium content in the lemon is natural, just like you stomach lining and it helps to rebuild your lining and the ulcer disappears. I didn't do the fasting one but just drank the mixture several times a day. Never thought of it for RP though. Very Interesting. Might just have to give it a try. There is a book out there about this diet, I'll have to see if I still have a copy.

Thanks ,

Take care and be well,

Elaine

Jeanine,

Regarding those letters, etc you mentioned collecting. I've

already started collecting those things. I've got one letter

from a coworker and another is in the process of writing

another. I've also listed those two people on my SSD forms,

and I think SSD may send them some forms to fill out too. My

mother already filled out a form for Social Security about

that stuff. I've filled out my daily activities form. I've

got my last two reviews, the last one done just as I went

out on disability and they are extrenely different enough to

make SSD take notice.

I expect to get denied the first time and I already have a

lawyer helping me out.

hi!

well my son is only 3 so i havent had to do the job thing yet but i

used to be a manger for a company and that is very rude and

dicrimnating!!! and even if it is consider a " disability " havent

they ever heard of the AMERICANS WITH DISIBLITY ACT? you did not lie

on your application because as far as your concerned you are not

disabled and you met the job requirements (from what you stated). i

would call and complain to the higher ups at the job and let them

know how you feel. good luck! and let us know if anything else

happens with it.

This is ILLEGAL. The is company has now committed two illegal acts.

The first was asking if someone has a disability on an application.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (passed by the first Bush

administration in 1990), a company is NOT allowed to specifically ask

on an application (or otherwise) if you have a disability. There is

no gray area on this provision of the law - they are squarely in the

wrong. The second illegal act this company has committed is by

discrimminating against you because of your disability. THIS IS NOT

OK. Depending on how you want to handle this, you could and are

justified in filing a complaing with both the Equal Employment

Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the Department of Justice (DOJ). If

this is a big enough company, you could probably solve the problem

with a letter to the head of the company (preferably signed and/or

drafted by a lawyer) outlinding the behavior and why it's a violation

of the law. If you or anyone else on this list would like some more

info. on the ADA, I've got some very good, very easy to follow

publications that outline exactly what your rights are under the ADA.

Good luck (and don't even think about letting them get away with this),

Kate-

Hilary is correct...it's illegal to ask if you have a disability.

However it is legal to ask if you have any conditions that would

require special accomodations, so that they can make said

accomodations for you (i.e. if the job required that you reach

things on a top shelf, they would be required by law [thanks to ADA]

to provide you with a stepladder, move the shelves lower, move

the " top shelf " things lower, etc.).

Not that I'm trying to make light of the situation, but your telling

about the interviewer thinking the interviewee before you was your

father reminded me of something that happened to my husband and I

when we went to the Central Florida fair last week. One of the

exhibitors was a really old guy who was representing the local Stamp

Club. He was giving out free stamps to kids, I guess to get them

interested in collecting. Joe and I walk past him, hand in and, and

the guy yells out, " Hey pops, why dont' you get some stamps for your

little girl there? "

FWIW, Joe is 31. I'll be 38 on Sunday .

And yeah, I was mad for a few minutes. Then I got over it. The deep

fried Oreos made me feel better.

I applied for social security disability and got a letter that they

want me to go for a mental examination. I was wondering if anyone else

has had to do this and what to expect. Thanks for the input. Lori

Lori, this is not at all unusual. Go to their exam, get an attorney and have him schedule another exam with someone that isn't working for SSDI, and what you really need is the Neuropsych Testing. The regular Mental Exam is just a small section of that --NS includes a lot of other things that can tell them if the sarc is effecting your brain and what parts of the brain are involved.

This is because each part of Neuropsych testing requires a different part of the brain to work to complete the task.

But go----- otherwise you will be fighting longer and harder to get approved.

Lori, I was sent for a mental health exam & a medical exam. SS chose the doctors. What a joke. Take notes! The doctor they sent me to was a family practice doc who admitted she knew nothing about sarcoidosis, let alone NS. She did a very cursory exam--looked at my ears, checked my neck, heart & lungs & knee reflexes. Then she had me get off the table & walk about 4 steps to the chair. That was it. No surprise that her note to SS said that she saw no reason why I couldn't work. Then the mental health exam. Sent to a psychologist with a major attitude. I don't know if she was just having a bad day or what, but I get along well with most people I meet & this woman was just plain rude. Asked me a few questions, then dismissed me.

I called my rep (my long-term disability company hired a firm to do the SSD process, thank God) & told her all this. She asked me to write it all down to use for the appeal. I hope that you have a better experience than this, but be prepared either way.

Hi Lori, I got that request too. They wanted me to go to some kind of special psychologist (can't remember what kind of course!) . But it is required to go and can only help your case. As to what they do is mainly check out your memory skillls, occupational therapy skills , etc. Don't worry, its not intimidating. Good luck. Debbie Co-moderator tiodaat@... wrote: I
