Sherrie, I went into surgery at 221 (3 pounds under

goal weight for Richmond KP). From what I understand,

the smaller you are, the slower your weight loss will

be. I could be so very wrong here. I have a coworker

who is at 191 and the Dr. told her not to lose anymore

or gain because that would take her out of standards

for the BMI portion. They are going to do her surgery

for her.

Pray about it and do what you know is best for you. I

do understand your friends concerns but ultimately,

you have to walk in your shoes. If this means no more

dieting for you and no more sickness and meds, then I

say go for it. I wish you luck with whatever you

decide to do.

I hear where you are coming from. I started out at 257 and am now at

235. My sister says she understand but in another breath she's

saying you are doing really great by going to the gym why do you need

to have the surgery. Then my mom freaks out everytime she hears

something from someone about a bad experience. I just keep my head

up and keep positive. Listen to your doctor if she says you are fine

just go with the flow!!!!!

Sherrie, I am 5'6" and a very muscular person, with truly large bones. No, not just the "I'm a big boned girl" excuse. i really do have a large frame. At surgery, I weighed 235. Right now I'm 168, but most people think I'm 140 or so. So, in other words, even though I technically have 15 lbs. to lose before I am at "normal weight" by BMI standards, I look normal now. I wear a size 10. If I actually lose all the way down to 135 (my personal goal, although the doctor said 145 would be great), I will probably be wearing a size 4 or 6. I've been thin before...but never this small. It turns out I will be able to be much smaller than I ever thought possible, given my build.

Today is my 5 month anniversary, and I've lost 67 lbs. My extra muscle (muscle burns more calories than fat) has caused me to lose pretty quickly. However, for the last two weeks, the weight has slowed down...and in fact, the month of October (my fourth month), I only lost about 5 or 6 lbs. So, I can see that it is seriousy slowing down.

I think it is very very rare with this particular surgery (Roux en Y) that somebody becomes underweight. sometimes, people with food issues can become semi-anorexic, but that isn't as common with this surgery as with some others.

The reality is that when your BMI is at a certain low level, your body requires way less calories to sustain your weight. As a result, the reduction in caloric intake has to be even more dramatic in order for you to continue to lose weight at a rapid pace.

You didn't mention your height. I you are 5'6 or above...I can see why your friend is worried. But, if you are 5'2"....you could probably lose down below 130, and still be quite healthy. Where are you getting the 130? is that based upon a prior weight? Remember, body composition changes as you get older...and some people actually can and should weigh less as they get older.

Go on to obesityhelp.com and find the BMI calculator. Input various weights at your height to find out at what weight you will actually be technically underweight. That will probably put your mind at ease, as I have found a very wide range of weights to be considered "normal". For example, I think for 5'6", I can weigh anywhere between 115 and 153 and be considered normal weight. I have a friend at my height who weighs 118, and she doesn't look anorexic. By the same token, I may look way too thin at 135. It's all very individual.

Good luck, and talk with your doctor. Remember, even if you do lose weight rapidly, and you need to slow it down, you can always eat more than three meals a day...you can eat all dayif you need to. So, I wouldn't be too worried about that.

Hey Sherrie,

Don't be too concerned about your current weight, if the doctor told you not to loose any more weight, then don't. I'm in the same position at 192. Like you I'm going forward with the surgery. Your body knows when the body lost all the unwanted/not needed pounds (dont mean to offend anyone).

Like Pam said, Pray about it and do whats best for YOU

Im getting my surgery at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View...I tried to go through Kaiser in Santa Clara but they denied me and even tried to appeal it. I dont know why I am 33 5'3 and weighed 225lb at the time and uncontrolled diabeties for most of my life. I have even had a miscarriage due to my uncontrolled diabetes. So I went on my husbands insurance and got approved. topazmisskitty wrote:

Hi Robynn,

I am also large bones..and Im not just saying that either. People cant believe when I tell them how much I weigh. I am 5'3 and 33 years old so my BMI right now is 33. 130lbs is a goal that I personally set...I think "normal weight" is 115-125. I feel comfortable from just reading off here that I will be okay. Thank you. I also emailed my Dr and she said that its fine, and I do have to watch what I eat because Im diabetic. So she never mentioned that I have to stop loosing weight. And thats pretty much what I feared I was thinking oh my BMI is at 33 right now and the criteria was a BMI of 35 with one co-morbility. So Im under that and I was thinking that they would tell me I couldnt have the surgery because I wasnt overweight enough...(lol that sounds so stupid) I WASNT OVERWEIGHT ENOUGH! HA! But she never said anything like that. Im having my surgery at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View (where I was born) with Dr. . Kaiser felt I didnt meet the criteria at

225lbs and diabetic for most of my life. But from what you explained about the calorie intake and loosing weight slower it makes sense and I will also tell my best friend how it works. Thank you so much!

Hi, I was 228 at surgery and I lost to 150 by my 5th month, I'm now 142 at 7 months. If you do the things your suppose to your body will slow down a lot by 6 months. If your eating your meals your body won't go down to far, I ask the doctors these same questions. Also if your smaller to start with the doctors say smaller people have a tendency to lose slower, that wasn't true for me in the first 5 months, but after that it has slowed sooooooooo much and I do every thing by the book and more. So I think your friend is over worrying. Talk to your doctor again, and have questions on hand. Many people will tell you lots of things, because they worry and love you. Your friend might be thinking you'll be smaller than her, we always get things from others that aren't true, comments that are hurtful, there's jealousy, and so much more that goes along with this surgery. So stay on here, listen and learn all you can, but talk to your doctor

again also. Take care, we're all here for you. Donnas_maldonado2001 wrote:
