Guest guest
cindy, with any surgery with a large abdominal incision there is a greater risk of getting a hernia if you are not very careful about straining the abdominal muscles for about 6-8 weeks at least after the surgery. don't strain at bm's, don't pick up anything or anyone over 15-20 lbs., etc; sometimes tho, even if you are careful, you get a hernia anyway, from a powerful sneeze, or throwing up or dry heaves, or even a bad coughing fit. it all depends on how well your tissues knit and how quickly. i have had 3 c-sections, with a vertical incision, and have an umbilical hernia right at the very top of the scar. so, if they don't fix it during ds surgery, i'll get it fixed later with tummy tuck surgery. i have had this hernia for probably over 10 years. it has never caused too much trouble. just a little twinge now and then. it is not strangulated, but i know to get help quick if that should happen. if you have the open ds, then you will have to be careful like i said earlier. if you have lap, then it is a very very small risk. it's just those larger incisions you have to be careful of. hope this helps mary y st.louis itchin to be switchin > Hi All, > > I getting a little concerned about hernia problems. Guest guest
I have a horizontal incision rather than a vertical one. Horizontal ones have a smaller percent of hernias-- or so my many surgeon friends have told me. Dr Welker does both. in Seattle ----- Original Message ----- > cindy, > with any surgery with a large abdominal incision there is a greater > risk of getting a hernia if you are not very careful about straining > the abdominal muscles for about 6-8 weeks at least after the > surgery. don't strain at bm's, don't pick up anything or anyone over > 15-20 lbs., etc; sometimes tho, even if you are careful, you get a > hernia anyway, from a powerful sneeze, or throwing up or dry heaves, > or even a bad coughing fit. it all depends on how well your tissues > knit and how quickly. > i have had 3 c-sections, with a vertical incision, and have an > umbilical hernia right at the very top of the scar. so, if they > don't fix it during ds surgery, i'll get it fixed later with tummy > tuck surgery. i have had this hernia for probably over 10 years. it > has never caused too much trouble. just a little twinge now and > then. it is not strangulated, but i know to get help quick if that > should happen. > if you have the open ds, then you will have to be careful like i said > earlier. if you have lap, then it is a very very small risk. it's > just those larger incisions you have to be careful of. > hope this helps > > mary y st.louis > itchin to be switchin > > > > > Hi All, > > > > I getting a little concerned about hernia problems. Guest guest
Thanks....I have been lucky enough to not have any surgeries...tonsils don't count here ....I would only consider this if I could have it done lap...truth is I'm too scared to deal with it done open. Also, you mentioned a tummy tuck...I have heard quite a few people talk about this...is this ever covered under insurance or is this considered strictly cosmetic? My weight is mostly in my behind and thighs...I think I'm gonna be wishing for more than a tummy tuck Cindy
