It sounds to me like it might be your neck. That's what is was for me. It took

several trips to the chiropractor, but it improved immensely. I always have

minor neck pain, but I just can't handle the headaches. Whenever I get one, I

go the chiropractor, and one treatment can usually fix it.

Usually when I get a headache, I can trace it to a fall, or banging my head on

something (which, I do way too often). It doesn't take much to get my neck out

of wack. If your doctor tells you it is a tension headache, then your neck

could be the cause. If your muscles are always in a knot, they tend to pull the

neck vertebrae out of alignment and cause all kinds of problems, especially if

you have had a neck injury in the past. The other thing that helps a tension

headache is massage. If you sit at a computer all day, it's hard not to store

tension in your neck and shoulders.

My advice would be to keep pursuing this. Your present doctor doesn't seem to

be much help, but there are many ways to reduce sending all you tension to your

shoulders and neck. None of these methods are as easy as taking a pill, but

they definitely work better.

Headaches

Do you suppose the headaches are somehow wls related? Maybe a

deficiancy in something? I can't imagine what brings them on, but

they start around the base of my neck, progress to my jaw, then into

my ears;it feels like they are going to burst. Then wraps around my

head like a vice and the top of my head feels like it is full of

cement. They start about an hour after I wake up and get worse as the

day goes on and last for many days. The current one is on day 4. My

doc says they are stress/tension headaches, but my life feels like a

breeze compared to the last 10-15 years, I don't get it?? I wonder if

anyone else (in the wls community) is having this problem?

Hi -

I agree with you. I always use an anti-inflammatory drug if I have to

because we have autoimmune disease which is inflammatory. Even with a

C -section I didn't use acetaminophen (it is a pain relief only drug-didn't

use morphine or oxycontin either).

Acetaminophen is primarily metabolized by the liver. Since Graves' patients

often have elevated liver enzymes even without being treated, and they

often are worse when treated, it seems foolish to take a drug, like

acetominophen when you don't have to.

Sodium doesn't worsen our disease. Iodine does.

Take care,

dx & RAI 1987 (at age 24)

> Since developing Graves' I've had lots of sinus headaches.and other muscle

aches. I understand aspirin is bad to take as it affects thryoid levels and

ibuprofen is bad because it has the red coloring and hence iodine. The

recommendation at Mediboard was to go with acetaminophen because naproxen

sodium is high is sodium. However, I'm not sure what the drawback is with

sodium per se, and I like being able to use an anti-inflammatory pain killer

(like naproxen, and unlike acetaminophen/Tylenol).

massage of the temple pressure points for headaches, with some success.

I have found a great remedy.

I have had both sinus headaches and

migraine headaches (not at the same

time) since having Graves.

What I have found that works for me is

the herb " Feverfew " . It is available by

a number of manufacturers. My health

food store has about 6 different ones.

I take 2 capsules the minute I get a

headache. Sometimes I have to take

a total of 6 capsules a day. *The great

thing is that the headaches begin to go

away within less than an hour of starting

the " Feverfew " . It's amazing!

(Previously, I have tried at least 40 other

homeopathic or herbal remedies...but

only the Feverfew has worked for me. I

feel fine after taking it.)

Best,

Ron

Have you tried:

- high doses of Vitamin B2?

- highish doses of magnesium (800-1000 mg a day of magnesium citrate)?

- acupuncture?

All of these things are both safe during pregnancy AND *clinically*

proven to reduce or eliminate migraines.

It was the magnesium and acupuncture combo that ELIMINATED mine. And

before I got started on those things, I had 48 headaches of 12 hours

or longer in 42 days. Yep. I had 'em bad. And also had CAT scans and

MRIs, vision tests, bloodwork, and neurological examinations to try to

figure out what was wrong with me.

Good luck,

Donna,

I have a fifteen year old girl and a 10 year old daughter who both

suffer from bad migraines. They take amitriptaline to help with the migraines.

My

son who is 12 also gets them but not as bad as my girls. We have MIDS

Maternally Inherited Dysautonomia Mitochondrial Myopathy. Maybe if your

daughter

would like to talk with another High school girl I know Kira would be glad to

e-mail with her. Just let me know. Kira attends full time High School and

also has an IEP. She is in the Honors course work line. Anyway hang in there.

Patience is definitely something that Mito requires, especially with these

older ones!

I've been asked if I have migraines, but my severe headaches seem to

be due to either sinus problems or jaw problems. I never thought my

sinuses were that bad until they did a CAT scan and found my sinuses

are very different in size, one side is half the size of the other,

completely inapparent from the exterior.

Basically my sinus headaches feel like a railroad spike through my

head, sometimes with auras, and I sometimes end up having mito

episodes because the pain is so bad. Some things that work for me

are Breathe Right strips (also good if you have sleep issues) worn

overnight, guanifenesin (not sure if it's spelled right, but it is an

ingredient in cough syrup that helps clear out congestion), and

sleeping with my head elevated.

One simple thing that my dad just had was a sinus X-ray - he has

chronic bad breath, and it is due to a chronic sinus infection. The

X-ray showed that his sinus walls were significantly thickened from

inflammation and infection.

The pain of a sinus headache is unrelenting, and can occur in many

different, or multiple :(, parts of the head, including the forehead,

the back of the neck, the temples, the cheeks, and the eyes.

I am very interested as to how migraines are diagnosed, as I noted

above I've been asked if I have them, but I say no since treating

sinus issues minimizes my headache pain.

Take care,

RH

Hi Kim,

Thank you for emailing me back, I am sorry it has taken me so long to respond

just been very busy. She was given Lexpro for her Dysautonomia and won't take

that all the time just for short periods thanks again and take care.

Hi, ...

I used to get terrible migraines, and when I could not get to the

acupuncturist, I would sit in a tub full of hot water with a wet,

really cold towel on my head! Something about the contrast of the hot

water on your body with the extreme cold on your head really helped.

It's worth a shot, and it's free and does not cause any liver damage

(that I'm aware of, anyway!)!! Also, the Excedrin Migraine pills have

caffiene in them, and from what I have read, you are probably cutting

down on that since you have been staying away from Starbuck's, so maybe

you are having some withdrawal? Good Luck, Shonda.

Well, I think it is what you put down for #1. I started writing down when I was

getting my headaches. What the weather was like, what I had done that day, what

had I eaten. Come to find out when there was stress at home or work I would get

a headache. So personally I think you already tagged it. Were your starbucks

with caffeine?

Hi ,

My wife and I have been having awful headaches as well. While we

usually seem to have headaches of some sort, they are usually due to

job stress (yes, her too) and allergies. I finally went to my doctor

and he gave me a presciption for Naseril (sp?). It's a spray that I

shoot up my nose twice a day to help clear my sinuses. I had tried

Beconase in the past with iffy results. So far this is helping. It

hasn't completely resolved my sinus issues, but it does make them more

tolerable.

As for my wife, she rode out the worst of it last week...missing only

one day and a half of work. She took a lot of over the counter

stuff...and we both pop sudafed...and saline mist up the ol' nostrils

as well.

My sinuses bother me all year, but it seems worse in the fall. I have

heard this is probably due to molds. I also wonder what the strain of

being overweight contributes to headache pain.

Hope you find some relief...

I too am alergic to molds, nasty stuff. I seem to be plugged up

most of the year. I am also alergic to cats, have 3 and tobacco,

smoked for 7 years. Quit that 2 years ago and that is why I am

having the surgery. I put on 70 pounds. Yikes. It was the final

push for me to seek out this surgery as a tool. I have been yo-yo

dieting for years and now is the time to end it for good and become

a healthy mom to my son. I sure would hate to leave this Earth

early and force him to live with his father (the RAT). Ha Ha

It's hard to say want is giving you the headaches, so many things can. Your stress, hormones, less caffeine, allergies, and even the vicodine. Vicodine gives me headaches, does not relieve them, just other pains not sure why. So with so much going on for you it can be one or a combination of things. Hope they get better. Hi everyone,

I am one of the first member of the group. I do not email much anymore because it is hard for me to read all of the emails and type. Anyway, I know a lot of you have headaches, which I have also during my illness. I am having them more now just about everyday. I go to bed with them and wake up with them. Just wanted to know if anyone has them that much and that bad. If so what are they doing for them. I take pain meds. for them but it does not help that much. Also has anyone been to Duke Hospital in NC. I went there at first and they told me they did not know much about Neuro sar. they said I would be better off with my Dr. in Greenville NC, which is one of the top Drs. dealing with neuro sar. Any help would be appreciated.

My first thought and the most benign and easy to take care of issue is dehydration. That alone can cause one nasty, nasty headache.

The second is that at night, as we relax and start to go to sleep, we end up with our oxygen saturation levels dropping way low. So if your lungs are already compromised, then that may be an easily correctable problem. Do you have sleep apnea? You may need additional oxygen during the night-- and they can check that issue with a simple sleep study and/or a pulse oxyemeter that will measure your oxygen levels while you sleep.

Lastly, I'd be checking with the neurologist. If you have meningitis or another issue going on with increased inflammation-- a spinal tap can diagnosis this. Ct's or MRI's are also necessary to rule out other organic problems.

Do get this checked out, and take care of yourself. It's good to see you post.

Hi ,

I have no answers for you about treatment, but I have the

same problem with headaches......I have a headache all the time

and sometimes it gets so bad that I have to go to bed and sleep

for awhile to get it to be tolerable. My Doctors tell me to take

pain medicine and that is all they can come up with! I get so

upset with them, but for some reason, most Doctors do not

really understand about sarcoidosis and neurosarcoidosis! It

is time they learned!

Hang in there.......we are all in this together.

Hi ,

I have the same problem with headaches, they are so bad that I am

for me which works about 95% of the time, does not take to totally

away, but enough to carry on.. But without it I don't know what I would

do because nothing else worked and I've tried just about everything

else.
