Guest guest
Jeanne, I feel your frustration and I know that with your condition if makes for weight loss to be even harder and sometimes seems impossible to obtain but you know based on what you typed here that there are some things that you can do (which you have already done to lose 5%) and continue to do that just might help you reach not only the 5% but the ultimate 10% Kaiser is requiring of everyone to lose. Why don't you try to continue removing those things that you did that helped you to lose the 5%. I am almost certain that this will help you and even though I know it is discouraging please hang in there. You will get there. Sometimes we hit potholes on the road of life. We just have to stop a minute and take a look at the damage but continue on the road once we have accessed and found a solution to the problem. I know this did not offer much to help you but I am hoping that something in my email response helps you. Take care and keep us posted. Guest guest
Hi Jeanne, I also have hypothyroidism and have been on medication for years. It was very difficult for me to loose the weight that Kaiser required and I like you got very very frustrated. But you have to stick with it, it sounds like you have already changed your diet, so continue with that and exercise. Exercise was the best thing for me in conjunction with the diet. Hang in there, it will come off. I had my surgery on 10/12 and am doing great. Your day will be here before you know. Keep up the good work you already lost 5% and 5% will be easy. > > Well today is the day I go and do battle with the nutritionist. Guest guest
Thanks Pam for the words of encouragement. The problem is that I never added that crap back into my diet and still not losing. Guest guest
Hi Jeanne, I would start the morning with breakfast and that was usually a protein drink, especially during the week. On the weekends I would have 1 scrambled egg, 1 wheat toast, decaf coffee. Lunch would be a good healthy salad. Dinner would be chicken or fish, maybe on the weekends we would have beef. No potatoes, I sticked to only vegetables. I drank llots of water at least 70oz. a day, which I'm still doing. I also joined Curves and go there at least 3 times a week, after work. After I get my staples out I will go back to Curves, right now I'm just walking in the neighborhood. I'm 15 lbs. down since surgery on 10/12. You hang in there, if I can do it so can you. Guest guest
Jeanne: Have you asked about water pills? Like you I also had great difficulty lossing that 10% and I followed all the rules - it was after the doctor prescripted water pills that the weight started to come off. Guest guest
Marita, Beleive it or not, my diet has been just like that for 6 months with the exception of a trip to Sweet Tomatos now and then for the corn bread and soup I devour. I drink well over the the amount of water required. My last lab test had my TSH at 5.5 and that is right on the border, so I have made an appt to see my PCP about maybe upping my medication and see if that works. I did meet with the Nutritionist, we went over my food logs that I have been keeping. I was going over the 1200 by about 150 - 200 calories a day. But, I was adding in a protein shake to build myself up. She suggested that I do a " Slim Fast " type of diet. 2 Shakes and a healthy meal. I scoffed at the thought of drinking a Slim Fast shake and told her I was drinking other whey proteins. She asked if the were thte kind form Vitalady. Of course they are as they are the best I think. So it looks as though the medical field is starting to catch up with the nutrition requirements of WLS folks. So in short, I am going to give this a try and follow it 100% cross my fingers and pray this works. I am so ready to have this surgery and feel like this past year has helped my to come to terms with my health and improve it and live life more fully. Thanks to all and the gentle pushes to move forward. Guest guest
Jeanne, You did well losing the first 5%, and your body let you because you had really cut the calories. By the time you lost the 5% your body was ready for a change, that's why we maintain. So by going to 1200 now and just increasing your exercise just a little, I bet the next 5% will come off. Keep up the good work and don't give in. Do it, I know you can. Guest guest
Jeanne, my TSH level was up to 17 in July, Dr. Umbach (SSF) wouldn't do surgery until it got down to between 7-9. My primary doctor increased the meds to 375mg. and it was down to 4 by the end of September. Your level isn't really high at all. Are you exercising at all? I would suggest you try the slimfast diet for at least two weeks and see how that goes. Good luck to you, believe me I know how hard it is. Stick with it, like I've said before if I can do it, anybody can.
