Guest guest
I am in the same spot, Luci. Maybe we can support each other. The caffeine keeps me going too. I was in the hospital for four days a couple of weeks ago and I had the worst caffeine headaches. Like my head was going to explode. I drink soda all day long. What I've done so far is to substitute minutemaid lemonade or guava citrus for first 1/3 and now 1/2 the soda. It's not carbonated so I'm weaning myself of the carbonation too. I'm going to try to drink more water too, but getting off the caffeine is the first hurdle. Hang in there! Pamela aka sheltiepam 9/10 of a pound Thanks Kristie and Donna for your imput regarding my enigma. And thanks to everyone about info on caffeine> I am drinking about 4-5 cups of this stuff a day and have decided to cut down. only half and half in the morning hours. It is very difficult to give up on this addiction - I work the swing shift - 4:30pm - 1:00 am - and I am up by 8:00am to get things down around the house. MY COFFEE AT NIGHT HELPS ME STAY AWAKE. It will take some time for me to get off this stuff.luci
Guest guest
Lucia, If you're working till 1:00 am, and then you're up by 8:00 to get things done around the house, you're not getting nearly enough sleep. And if you're having trouble losing weight, that could possibly be a contributing factor. They've done studies on the relationship between sleep and weight, and those folks who get the least sleep have a much greater tendency to put on weight, to develop diabetes, to have high blood pressure, to get sick, etc. That's one of the reasons they think sleep apnea is implicated in so many of our co-morbidities. . . if your sleep is getting interrupted so much, you're not getting enough rest and you're stressing your body too much. So even if the " Stuff " piles up around the house, GET THAT SLEEP! It may help you lose weight and it will certainly make you healthier and less stressed. If you feel pressured or stressed out about getting everything done around the houses, you might check out http://flylady.net - a sort of self-help group for those of us who are " organizationally challenged " . I really like that " Flylady " puts a lot of emphasis on making small, manageable changes and then building them into routines that change your life a little bit at a time, whether it's beginning to exercise, to clean your house, or to get control of your finances. It's not to everyone's taste, but I enjoy it and you might also. And she keeps reminding people to get enough rest and take care of themselves! Guest guest
Pamela and Luci I also was a big caffeine person, I had 4-5 cups of coffee and 3-4 soda's a day. First off I developed kidney stones from the caffeine not one, but 11 and had to have the procedure done to remove a big on and it causes problems coming out during the procedure, then the doctor had to leave a stint in for three weeks so I could pee, talk about some pain. For six months kidney stone pain is worse than labor. After that I cut down to 2 cups of coffee and 2 soda's until orientation 3 months later. Then I cut 1 cup coffee the first week, 1 soda the second week, the 2 cup coffee the third week and the last soda the fourth week, as I was doing this I added in more and more water, then diet snapple without tea just for a change of taste, I need that. It worked and the headaches weren't bad and only lasted about a week, now I'm 6 months post op and have plenty of energy, have lost 127 pounds and don't need the caffeine. I get up at 5:30 am and not to bed before 11pm, and I was able to get off my CPAP machine and I will never do caffeine again. My kidney doctor said bariatric patients have more of a chance of kidney stones, because our body absorbs more of the caffeine. I really never want to go through that sh_ _ again. Guest guest
Wow. I have a friend with kidney stones and it's hard enough just watching him going through the pain. Thinking about having that much pain myself. ugh. Have you had any problems since cutting the caffeine? I haven't had coffee in two weeks and I am cutting down on the soda. I am down to one in the morning and one in the evening. I used to go through a 2 liter bottle a day so that's progress. My goal is to be caffeine free by the time I see the dietitian on the 28th. Guest guest
Pam, No problems since giving up the caffeine, and making sure I'm drinking all 64 ozs of water or fluids (diet snapple) whatever, but my kidney doctor says water is best, the surgeon said it doesn't matter, so I drink at least 48 ozs of water and a diet snapple, chrystal light or two. Now it's been to years no stones and I don't need to go to the kidney doctor any more. Donnaazurewinds@... wrote: Wow. Guest guest
I've used a CPAP for about five years now. It was REALLY hard for me to get used to the mask at first, not the mask itself actually but rather a " breeze " that I could feel coming out around the mask. I tried tightening the straps that hold it on, and that helped some. Eventually I got more or less used to it and found I couldn't sleep without it. However, I eventually went out and purchased a second machine on my own out-of-pocket from a place in Sunnyvale called the CPAP Store. . . It's on Fremont near , in a medical center there. I did it because I wanted a much smaller machine that I could use for travel, and the ones Kaiser issues through Apria Healthcare are not exactly compact. I had to get a copy of my prescription from Kaiser, and that's when I realized that the pressure of the machine I'd been given the first time was actually 2cm. higher than it should have been (12 instead of 10)! So if you have trouble getting adjusted to the mask after a while, esp. if you feel like there's too much (or too little) air, be sure to ask and have it checked. I've got to say, though, that it's wonderful now. I LOVE having it on. There's a slight amount of sound from the machine, but it's just enough to serve as " white noise " and help me sleep even better! Cathy C. > > I go on the 27th to get screened for the apnea. I have a lot of edema in my abdomen and the doctor told me that the CPAP will help get rid of that. So I may have been taking diuretics for years for not reason. I hope it does work. > Did you have any trouble adapting to having the mask on your face? > Pam > Re: Re: 9/10 of a pound > > > Cathy, > I agree, I couldn't lose anything and was eating under 1200 calories a day, then when I got my CPAP machine for my sleep apnea and eating the 1200 calories I did great. Sleep makes a big difference in so many ways. Donna >
