Guest guest
A lateral gastrectomy means that there is a vertical incision of the stomach. The stomach is cut along the greater curvature of the stomach in a vertical line. This leaves the stomach as a narrow almost tube-like shape with the esophagus at the top and the pylorus at the bottom. The horizontal cut removes the pyloric valve. I think I was daydreaming when I answered this post. I *do* know the difference between vertical and horizontal gastroplasties although my recent posts may not indicate that. in Seattle ----- Original Message ----- > Hi , > > I'm confused by your post. Guest guest
Hi , Thank you for clearing that up. My confusion was with the term " lateral " . I actually thought the word literally meant " horizontal " , but after reading this post, I looked it up and it means " away from the middle " . Since the stomach contents go from top to bottom the " middle " is a vertical line which means a lateral gastrectomy can also be called a vertical gastrectomy. So I learned something new today. And all this time I thought the folks who said they got a lateral gastrectomy meant their pyloric valve was being bypassed! Not so! How wonderful for them! Thank you.
