Guest guest
Thanks for your recipe. I have problems with cold water, too, but not baking soda, honey or salt, at least, I don't think. I hope you don't think I'm being intrusive, but do strong odors (like pine-sol) give you heartburn when you're in the area where someone has cleaned with it? They do me. My husband cleans with it, and he doesn't understand why I object to it so much! Lysol spray bothers me, too. I feel like if it's giving me heartburn, couldn't it be affecting my digestion, too? Since my digestive dysfunctions developed I can't touch it or suffer major problems, perhaps further damage. I already deal with muscle control problems, and a poorly functioning upper GI -- I don't need any more proglems [grin]. I just experimented with the SCD electrolyte drink recipe for a month or two, trying different ingredients that better suited my stomach and supplied what my body needed. For example, my stomach won't tolerate honey or baking soda and only accepts the smallest bit of salt. Too large a dose of minerals also triggers severe nausea. So I had to do a lot of experimenting to find what works for me. My electrolyte drink recipe ends up being: 1 quart of filtered water 150 mg. magnesium capsule, emptied 50 mg. potassium tablet, crushed 1/16 tsp. sea or iodized salt Sometimes I'll warm up the water, but often I don't as I'm not needing to mix honey in with other minerals. Using hot water does allow the minerals to bind better with the water molecules, but I drink my homemade stuff within the same day, so there isn't too much sediment left at the bottom of my glass. I've also begun experimenting with liquid minerals, which makes things a whole lot easier. I usually need more salt and something sweet after a bout of low-electrolyte symptoms, so I drink a glass of my electrolyte- boosting drink, wait 20 minutes then eat a small serving of heavily-salted cooked veggies (I always have cooked veggies on hand!). Thirty minutes later I'll have a glass of diluted fruit juice, usually apple but often orange; whatever I happen to have ready in my refrigerator. Since my stomach also doesn't tolerate cold or hot, I have to take out the juice while I'm guzzling down the electrolyte drink so it will be warmer by the time I need it.... This is what works for my body. You'll need to experiment to learn what works for you. Hopefully your body will accept the SCD electrolyte drink recipe as it is written! And you won't have to go through all this other rigamarole too [grin]. I get ELyte from this source: http://elytesport. com/ I haven't seen it in any local stores. I get the green-labeled version, just the plain ELyte, not the ELyte Sport as that one has too much salt. ELyte is a concentrate, needs to be added to water. I use about a fourth of what is recommended on the bottle to get the salt levels past my stomach. I keep a bottle of ELyte at home and at work, since I need to boost my electrolytes often. Any physical activity sets my body back quite a bit [sigh]. As you can tell, I'm dealing with functional digestive disorders along with some neurological deterioration that is slowly progressing. Thanks to SCD I have my digestive system stabilized, so it is working as well as it can. There's not much to be done about the neuromuscular stuff, but I'm learning to cope. As a benefit of dealing with all these problems, I'm learning a lot about physiology and body systems, which is always interesting. Guess that's enough information for now [grin]. I do tend to get wordy. Kim M. SCD 5+ years Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction 6 years neurological deterioration 3 years Hi, Kim.I feel like I have similar occurrences - where I have symptoms noone understands. When I drink even a small amount of wine, I feel really tired somtimes. My muscles feel as though I've run a mile, and it happens with in a few minutes of when I take the first sip. So, I just don't drink unless I'm cooking with it.How do you alter the electrolyte drink recipe to suit you? Is Elyte easy to find in a store, or do only health food stores have it? Laurie, it sounds to me as though you have chemical sensitivities. I do, too. They can cause a variety of symptoms and, alas, the only thing to be done is to avoid them. This of course is hard to do with things like bathroom cleaners, when one is out and has to go! But at home it is at least theoretically possible. Could you look for less stinky things and ask DH to use them? Maybe you need a campaign of every time he does use something like this, point out in detail what it does to you. See if you can get it through his head eventually. For me, yes, they do cause digestive woes as well as headaches and pain.
