Guest guest
Hi there. The questions you've asked are good ones and valid. The experience is different for everyone and everyone reacts differently but I'll tell you my experience in hopes it will alleviate your fears. I had lower jaw advancement done on Nov. 5th. My surgery lasted 1 1/2 hours and went very well. I remember waking up and hearing someone mentioning that my eyes were open but I don't remember them taking out the nose tube. I was also constantly asked how my pain was and they kept giving me medicine till the pain level was negligible. I was very comfortable the rest of the day. I had some gunk lodged in my throat that they removed with a suction tube via my nose but it wasn't bad at all and I was just glad to get the irritating stuff out. That only happened twice. My throat was sore for a few hours from the breathing tube so don't be surprised about that. I was never nauseated. Um, what else? It's helpful to have a friend or family member sitting there with you to hold your hand. I napped a little that first day but was really surprised about how comfortable I was. And no, I couldn't open my mouth but it felt secure and I found that I didn't even want to try to open it. I had a " face bra " bandage wrapped around my neck and face to help keep the swelling down along with ice packs. I was really worried about all of this before my surgery. The other concern I had was the language barrier. I had my surgery in Japan and I'm not a native Japanese. I do speak the language but I was worried that I would be so out of it either from medicine or fear that I wouldn't understand the nurses. I was able to understand most everything and everyone was extremely kind. Let your doctors and nurses know your concerns. They are there for you. Best of luck to you. I'm sorry this reply was so long. I hope it helps. You aren't alone in this ordeal. Let us know how you are. P.S. I started to cry once in the hospital but realized that my nose was getting stuffed up so I quickly stopped. I ended up laughing instead. > > I'm scheduled for upper/lower/palate Jan. 17 and I've been having > bad nightmares about it. Guest guest
Thanks for replying. So I assume then that you are not allowed to be given anything to drink while that tube is in place. I didn't know that. So if I start to feel nauseous, etc. then I am supposed to write it down for the nurses to see so they will give me something (assuming won't be able to talk or talk well). Were you in ICU? Are their supposed to be nurses right there to help you? How was in when the tube came out? What do they tell you when they take it out? > > > > I'm scheduled for upper/lower/palate Jan. 17 and I've been having > > bad nightmares about it. Guest guest
Hi. Thanks for replying! I'm glad you thought the questions were good ones, I was scared maybe they weren't, I've just been thinking about so much stuff lately. I like to hear people's experiences as it really helps. My family doesn't understand any of this at all. > > > > I'm scheduled for upper/lower/palate Jan. 17 and I've been having > > bad nightmares about it. Guest guest
I had surgery on Dec. 8 and I had the NG tube. They put it in after you are asleep and I don't remember them taking it out. When I was coherent enough, it was already gone. My throat was really sore for about 10 days from it though. I had the same feelings as you about it, but the worst of it was the sore throat. Good luck! Casey > > I'm scheduled for upper/lower/palate Jan. 17 and I've been having > bad nightmares about it. Guest guest
My daughter said the same thing. However she did throw up. Since there is nothing much in your stomach, u throw up liquids and usually u r still in recovery. The nurses tell you to lean forward and the liquid just comes out. You will also have a catheter which will come out after surgery. Will probably have some burning first time u urinate. Re: Questions I had surgery on Dec. 8 and I had the NG tube. Guest guest
My experience was - the tube caused me no hassle really at all _ I was worried about it coming out, but that was no problem either (not as uncomfortable as the catheter) - I did not feel sick really (lucky here) because they do, as Bethanne points out, give you ant-emetics throughout your hospital stay. > > > > I'm scheduled for upper/lower/palate Jan. 17 and I've been having > > bad nightmares about it. Guest guest
I'm totally with Casey on this one. I had the NG tube as well, and was worried about it. So I asked about 3 people the morning of surgery what I would all have going on when I woke up. Well the anesthesiologist said that by law you have to be awake when they take the tubes out of your nose. I wasn't excited about that, because I thought that meant they would be there when I was coherent enough to notice. But when I woke up, and actually knew that I was awake, the tubes were already gone. Apparently I was awake before I remember being awake! It's kind of interesting to think what else I may have done while I was awake and don't remember being awake! But in any case, that was my experience. And my throat never really got sore from the tubes at all. All in all, nothing to worry about in my case at all! > > > > I'm scheduled for upper/lower/palate Jan. 17 and I've been having > > bad nightmares about it. Guest guest
I am 2 years post op. I have not tried sodas and wont. I heard that the gas could either stretch your pouch or cause it to rupture. I dont want to take that chance. Sugar is another story and I would warn against it. It was so much easier to stay away from it when I thought it would cause me to dump. Now that I dont dump, I admit I have sugar way more than I should. My most heartfelt advice would be to not tempt your pouch with what it shouldnt have. In the long run you will lose weight faster and not fall back into old habits. I wish I would have!! Its a matter of using your tool to the fullest and not " cheating " . That is the only thing I would change about my journey....I would not have tried no no foods to see if I could handle them....I was better off not knowing. Guest guest
Unfortunately I had the misfortune of having sugar jello the day of surgery. It was on my tray at the hospital and I " thought " it would be sugar free. NOT the case! I have never had worse pain in my life. I thought my new pouch was going to burn right through me. It took several different medications to finally get the storm to quite down. I had all this froth coming out of my mouth and it was just awful. To this day I WILL NOT try anything with over 4 grams of sugar alcohol in it even. Forget about real sugar! So scared for a repeat. But it fits with what says, she wishes she didn't try the no no foods and I know I never will try them having had that awful experience. If I hadn't had it, I might feel more compelled to try some of those no nos. I can't know if I will dump again or not. I just can't let myself have that option. I don't feel like I am missing out at all. I have also stayed away from all flour carbs. I do eat potato skins every so often but rarely. I don't crave carbs at all. There are all the office goodies in here, chocolate, brownies, cupcakes, just to name a few, and I don't even have the slightest thought to try them. Just the smell of them doesn't even appeal to me. My brain wiring is all different now. I am so glad about that because these were BIG weaknesses for me durning the Holiday season. Continueous snacking and stuffing myself to the gills. It is SO wonderful for ONCE to be in charge of what I am eating and not letting my cravings direct what I am going to do. This surgery is a tool and fortunatley for me so far it is working out to be the best thing I could have done to my self. Gifting myself a new life! Guess that was kind of a long response. Sorry. Hope it helps. Kay 360/290/180/? Guest guest
I have not tried soda and won't. But I like have tried different stuff and nothing makes me sick so I stay away from it just for that reason alone. Its that time of year when we get all sorts of goodies and I simply don't take it when it is offered to me. People forget that I had this surgery. If you can, stay away from the no no stuff. Happy holidays! Pam Marsh --- specialkmix2000 wrote: > Unfortunately I had the misfortune of having sugar > jello the day of > surgery. Guest guest
I made me a SF Pudding, and a regular Pudding for my boys they didn't like the SF. I thought I was getting a bite of the SF and I thought this is sweet, then a bad stomach ache and severe diarrhea for a while just with a bite. My body does NOT like sugar, I guess I am blessed. New foods I have to go slow too, I'm 8 months post op now. Guest guest
I am lucky in another way that my son is too young to really know the difference and he loves all the SF stuff I have made so far - jello, pudding, popsicles - so I only have to have one kind in the house - woohoo! Guest guest
It is easier since he is young. My guys young adults eat most SF only a few they don't like, they are both slim guys, and really watch what they eat this helps me too. We help each other, just wish someone could teach my husband. Even if it's SF he doesn't just have 1 or 2 he'll finish a box popsicles, the whole SF pudding if he's stressed, so it's hard to even have my things on hand, oh well less I get the better. Your doing okay Barbara? I will stop by one day my cold is gone and I have you a little something.
