At the time, saccharine was used to sweeten a number of soft drinks; that was legal (though, I still sort of question why it was). But it's not used any more because it was deemed to be a carcinogen (can cauuse cancer). However, I just saw something that said it may be " delisted " as a carginogen soon. And I guess the current stuff tastes a lot better than it used to; which the original stuff was awful, in my opinion. Re: bacon. The sugar left from the curing is only residual, and frying it crisply helps to get rid of almost all of that residual sugar that's left. I can eat pretty much all of the legal foods the diet has to offer, but I eat regular, thick-sliced bacon almost every day because I need the protein and fat it contains. I have no problem at all digesting it (and didn't from very early on). n > > - > UC - 1+ years > SCD - 7 months 100% strict and 4 months restricted diet. > Asacol - 5 pills a day > >

Guest guest
Actually, I'm looking at the book right now and she says that diet soft drinks "sweetened with aspartame or nutri-sweet may sometimes contain lactose and should be avoided, if possible. However, if this is the only type available, one per week is permitted" She goes on to say that those sweetened with saccharin are ok 2-3 times a week. So that goes back to the original question of - why is it ok once per week? You used to be able to get saccharin sweetened soda. Now you can't. See second answer. With the regular bacon, most of the sugar cooks out in the grease, especially if you bake the bacon on a cake-cooling rack over and edged cookie sheet. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund

Elaine did not like aspartame, but she was a realist. There are some people who, if you tell them they have to give up their soda entirely, will react more violently than the idea of losing grains and potatoes. There are an awful lot of people who, after a period of time on SCD find that they'd rather take some legal fruit jucie and add it to legal club soda, or make honey-sweetened ginger tea, ditto than deal with the aspartame. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
