Guest guest
I know how you are feeling, I am feeling completely and utterley fed up with the diet, just tired of the same old food all the time. Haven't cheated, so no help there. I think Christmas time is worse, watching everyone eating yummy scrummy food I used to enjoy. > > UGH!!! So technically, I wasn't 100% on SCD until a couple weeks ago since I was using flax seed. But it took me a good couple months to get to that point and then finally eliminate the flax. Then I was 100% and feeling good. > > Well, I did some Christmas baking and made some cookies for my co-workers. I had done this in the past without cheating, so I thought I would be OK. Well, I caved and had some cookies. And then I got back on the diet for a day then off then on. And now I am kicking myself, because I know I'm addicted to sugar and it's going to be a huge struggle to get detoxed from all that. > > Here is a strange thing that happened though even before I cheated. A week ago, I woke up with a fever ranging from 99- 101. It lasted a day, and it was the only odd symptom I had. The night before I had some peanut butter mixed with some SCD yogurt- it was a big helping. Then, two nights ago, I had the same thing, some peanut butter mixed with SCD yogurt and the next day I woke up with a fever that lasted all day same range. Could it be peanut butter or the yogurt that is causing this? I know both are legal, but I also know some people are sensitive to legals. Do food intolerances cause fevers? > > Also, can I please have some words of encouragement to get back on the diet. I feel like a total failure and I can't believe even with how sick I was before that I would jeopardize my health by eating junk. I guess it just goes to show how addictions can really kill you. I know both are legal, but I also know some people are sensitive to legals. Do food intolerances cause fevers? It sounds rather suspicious. I would do an experiment; Eat some yogurt one day, no peanut butter, then see if you get a fever. Same thing with testing the peanut butter. That way you know. Also, can I please have some words of encouragement to get back on the diet. I'm such a carb and sugar addict.Well, it's super hard around Christmas with so much extra candy and other junk food lying around! You've only been strict SCD for a couple weeks though, which isn't that long at all in the great scheme of things. The SCD takes time, and if you start now, and just stay on it, then you'll get there eventually! It took me forever to become 100% fanatical SCD, but with time, I've found that you get more used to the idea, and it's harder to cheat. Guest guest
I have put so much hard work into this, many hours of cooking my own special meals, as well as the rest of the families, that I couldn't cheat now. > > > Could it be peanut butter or the yogurt that is causing this? Guest guest
well, I'm not on SCD (DH is - I do the cooking), but I have been trying to cut certain things out of my diet and have "cheated" on my own personal diet in that sense, so I know the hardest part is getting back on track!! I applaud you for emailing the list and recommiting instead of just giving up. That's really great! All you can do now is look ahead - not back. What's done is done, time to move on, right? Guest guest
I personally think sugar is more addictive than heroin. For the first 2 weeks I started SCD, I would dream at night of bringing a cookie or other sugary “food” to my mouth. In my dream, instead of eating the cookie, my mouth would shut and I would hear “you can’t eat that”. You are not the first (or last!) to cheat at the beginning of the SCD. Most find that when they eat something illegal their symptoms return with a vengeance. Just continue with SCD. It will be worth it. When I started I ate a lot of honey to sub for the sugar.. Nowadays, I rarely use honey. A nice way to assist your body with detox is to soak in a warm bath with 2 cups Epsom salts added, for 20 minutes. Hang in there! Guest guest
I totally agree that sugar is more addictive than heroin. Actually, I've read articles comparing the addictiveness of the two. The funny thing is, I also have had many dreams of my eating illegals, but unfortunately in my dreams, I actually eat them and then they turn into nightmares about my going off the diet. Then I wake up and feel a lot better about not eating them in real life. However, that's not the case right now. You're right, I just need to recommit. It's much easier for me to stay on track than to get off track and start again. I just need a few days back on track and I'll be set...just need help getting over the first days of detox. > > I personally think sugar is more addictive than heroin. > > For the first 2 weeks I started SCD, I would dream at night of bringing a > cookie or other sugary " food " to my mouth. Guest guest
> > I totally agree that sugar is more addictive than heroin. There is a very well-written book called " The Mood Cure " by Ross. It deals with mood and nutrition, and also addresses addictions, and there are suggestions for nutritional support for overcoming carbohydrate cravings, as well. It was extremely helpful for me inovercoming deep fatigue (and some degree of adrenal exhaustion) some time ago. Lilian
Guest guest
Why are you on low carb SCD? I understand many people do it because of yeast problems, but SCD is hard enough without limiting your food intake from the beginning. You might try regular SCD and when you get used to it, switch to low carb. I just know there is no way I could have done low carb to start with. As soon as I could add fruits and veggies, I added everything I could and didn't worry about carbs. Last year aroun this time, I ate something a few times that was illegal and got really sick. It was accidental so I didn't blame myself too much. Dec. 18, 2009, I officially cheated for the first time. I went to my company's Christmas party, drank way too much and ate the bread pudding. I was really really drunk and wouldn't have done it otherwise (eating it is a blur). I am kicking myself. I have been having a lot of problems and have been eating a pretty basic diet too. I'm just hoping I don't go into a total flare. It kinda feels like I am. But, I'm moving forward and continuing SCD. It's kept me off meds for almost 2 years so I know it works. Don't kick yourself too hard for cheating. It happens. Just get back on the wagon and roll. I still have dreams about eating illegals though mine never turned into nightmares. I will actually wake up and look in the trash to see if I cooked whatever it was I dreamed about. The dreams are way less than they were in the beginning though. Now, I have one every couple months. You can do it though. When I look at people eating illegal food I used to love I just tell myself it will make me sick. I have made myself believe that I'm allergic to those things. (Obviously, 2 years into the diet, I'm not ready to eat normal again.) Just be patient and don't be too hard on yourself. The diet works you just have to give it time. You now have the foundation to help yourself. I wish you the best. Good luck!!!! Guest guest
I personally think sugar is more addictive than heroin. I couldn't agree more. In 1975 I learned I have hypoglycemia and did the first big " cleanup " of my diet, no sugar, no coffee, no refined stuff, no alcohol, a few other things. I told the doctor with great conviction that I wouldn't have any trouble giving up sugar but coffee would be very hard. It turned out to be the exact opposite! I sank coffee without a trace but sugar was a real struggle. However, once you get used to it, and on SCD used to not eating the starchy stuff we can't have, it really does get to be second nature. My DH has the gut of a goat, I think, he can eat whatever he wants (though he never overeats). It really doesn't bother me any more. Once in awhile I think something of his smells pretty good but it never goes beyond that. However, in the beginning it was hard because the cravings take time to go away. Guest guest
We all cheat in the beginning, even if it's just eating something that we don't realize isn't legal. The important thing is that you want to do SCD strictly...that part alone can be difficult. Just know that we've all been there. Sugar is super hard to give up. One of my coworkers said that there's no way she could do this diet. I told her that if I could, anyone can...they just need the right motivation. I'm so sorry to hear that you feel bad but maybe you could use that as a motivator to go 100% SCD? I'm not sure what your living situation is but if it's possible to give away as much illegal food as you can, it will help (food drives or something?). Out of sight, out of mind helps me a lot. Good luck! You CAN do this! And you will feel so much healthier! Stacey > > UGH!!! So technically, I wasn't 100% on SCD until a couple weeks ago since I was using flax seed. Guest guest
Amber, hi! I have been trying to do SCD for 2 months (since October 25 of this year -- 2009) Whenever i stay strictly on diet -- 100%, fanatical adherence -- I am lucky, I feel so much better. But I then "tempt fate" and eat something illegal and FEEL awful. I have started over twice with intro diet and it helps. I just had a slipup that got started on Christmas Day. I still struggle with what others think/say about my being on such a "strict" diet. Actually, it is not that strict to me because of yogurt, honey, fruit and almond flour concoctions but to others it seems "overdoing" it. But the difference it makes for me is so phenomenal. Each time I go "off" I don't enjoy it and I am more motivated to NOT go off. I am not overweight, but not too thin, very normal, healthy weight. But people still comment about my size (being small or not having to worry about what I eat -- not true!) but my main reason for doing SCD is the brain/gut connection and I don't know how to handle telling people why I don't eat ANYTHING -- to them. i.e. where I went for dinner there were two legals ... roasted turkey and peas and EVERYTHING else was illegal. stuffing, mashed potatoes, canned cranberry sauce, white flour biscuits, roasted tomaotes, rice, corn, candy, cookies, hmmm.. did I forget anything? I didn't bring food because we had just moved (from another state) and was simply too exhausted to cook, etc. But I really need to get to the point that I cannot be concerned about what other's think about what I do or don't eat .... any words of encouragment appeciated! Re: cheated...hating myself, could use some words of advice I totally agree that sugar is more addictive than heroin. Actually, I've read articles comparing the addictiveness of the two.
