Guest guest
In regular emails, I tend to say something like " Subject: Potato chips was Re: Bicycles " when responding to a minor note or a change of subject, but want to keep the original thread. I tend to keep the same subject in the thread response because on the web version, it is easier to follow a thread this way 'Course if you keep doing this, it will be something like: " Subject: Caterpillars was Re: Phone booths was Re: Potato chips was Re: bicycles " The archive search for Yahoo groups has improved IMHO, and those on webmail (which I have to be on because of email volume and difficulty reading the digest). If most people are on digest (do the moderators know this - I'd assume it is the case?), it would probably be best to change the subject once the gist has changed. I am on webmail for another Yahoo group, and they post pictures a lot, which aren't accessible to either webmail or digest people, only people on email. It's unfortunate that choosing a type of Yahoo group access (other than email) makes some things inaccesible. Take care, RH > Just a quick request. Guest guest
RH and others There's another issue that only the digest users see, and that's where people reply to replies to replies and so on, and the result is gigantic (and ALSO includes MANY copies of the Yahoo-standard bit about personal attacks and subscribing instructions). People who use individual emails only see the first handful of lines, which are the most recent reply to a reply, and it's therefore easy for them to ignore the gigantic trailer (which is only of very marginal interest, usually, especially the part that's many days and " replies-to " ago). With a digest, it can be a bit tiresome to scroll (really a LONG way sometimes) past this vast stuff just to get to the next message. Especially when the next post is short and/or not really related to the original subject anyway. The solution is for the poster to scroll down a ways before hitting send, and snip off (select then cut or delete) irrelevant trailers. Another solution is to use " address rules " in your email reader, to automatically put all incoming into a separate folder, so one can use the individual email approach but not get swamped with inbox overload. But that's advanced, doesn't work in certain cases, and depends on your email reader (like Outlook Express). Guest guest
Steve, For me, using the Outlook " address rules " as you suggested to sort mail has been by far the most arm-efficient method of reading group email, better than digest or reading online. Fewer clicks, less scrolling, less navigating in general. Thanks for the reminder on long trailers. (I still forget to cut them off sometimes.) The digest drove me nuts for that reason, that and the fact that it is more work to reply to individual posts. Guest guest
I have to say things are getting a bit better - people used to reply to the whole digest, so there would be multiple copies of WHOLE DIGESTS in a single digest. I do like the web interface, keeps my inbox clean and I don't need to look unless I have time. With the email or even the digests, I have to scroll back to find older copies, and check to see if things are read. With the webmail interface, subjects that are read are color-coded, so I just need to scroll through 20 or so items at a time. You can even use previews if you like. Guest guest
Cheryl, I can't find your original post. It didn't come through my email or the group site. Who knows where this stuff goes. In the past couple of days, I have gotten 7 copies of two different messages. The wonders of technology. Would you please post your message again? Hopefully, this time the cyber gremlins will leave it alone.
