Yes, Dr. Hess is the father of the BPD/DS procedure. Take a look at his published report, and he talks about how he devised the surgery, and even talks about the laboratory work that was done on dogs before humans were operated: http://www.duodenalswitch.com/Procedure/1998Hess/1998hess.html > All I know is I have had a weight problem since I was a baby. I had Great West PPO. They didn't require any documentation beyond what was in Dr. Rabkin's request for authorization, which listed my co-morbidities and noted some of my past weight-loss attempts. They took that at face value, thank goodness. It is amazing, though, when you sit down and try to piece together your diet history. At least for me, I was astounded at how many different things I had tried and failed at over the years! It's no wonder I was so gun shy about embarking on any further weight loss endeavors, with all the failures I'd endured. My " aha! " moment was when I realized and accepted that the obesity is a DISEASE process that no diet could defeat. I think for " normal " folks with 20-30 pounds to lose, it isn't insurmountable, but when you get to the level of morbid obesity, it's not something we can simply diet/exercise away.
