Guest guest
Well, Becky, the worms do add nutrition. Remember, I'm the person who ate (and liked!) mealworm stir-fry! I found out as an adult that my mother used to pick cockroaches out of the flour when we lived in Arizona. My dad was off work a lot & Mom worked as a waitress, which didn't really provide enough for a family of five. There were no food stamps, etc. back then. When things were really bad, she would go to the priest at our church & get maybe $5. My mom was expert at stretching her resources. I had an uncle with 5 kids who had a habit of showing up at suppertime. Mom might have had enough ground beef to make each of us a hamburger, but she would just brown it all with some onions, add milk & flour (without the roaches!) to make a big pot of gravy, and we would have bread with gravy on it. I never really noticed or cared, because I was happy to see my cousins, but Mom told me that one time my brother , who was 4 yrs. older than me, very loudly asked, "Why does Uncle Gene always come & eat our food?" Uncle Gene got insulted & left, but I guess it didn't last long. One time we were broke; my dad was going to be paid on Monday for a sign painting job, but on Friday we had almost nothing to eat. Then some friends showed up with a big box of zucchini and we ate zucchini all weekend. Mom fried it, made pancakes with it, whatever she could think of. My dad would never eat any kind of squash after that, for the rest of his life. I think it was the fact that he hadn't been able to provide for his family & he just couldn't stand the reminder. Well, didn't mean to go on for so long. Guess I need to earn my nickname! She had always LOVED fried chicken livers until she saw worms in some of the livers as they came down the belt...the people would just pull the ends off and the livers would go their merry way (to the stores!!!). Yuck...I never could eat them after she told me that. I've tried it several times, from home gardens & in fancy restaurants. Sorry. The same with liver & onions. I keep getting sucked into it--it looks good & smells good; why wouldn't it taste good? Nope. Now, I like fried chicken livers, but that's it. My mother-in-law used to make the best chicken livers. She showed me how & stressed to poke lots of holes in them before putting them into the grease. Well, I decided to try it one time. I guess I didn't poke enough holes, because as soon as I dropped those suckers into the grease, it popped all over the kitchen! Walls, counters, ceiling! I ran from the kitchen & didn't know what to do. My husband put a paper sack over his head with eyeholes in it & ran into the kitchen to put a lid on the skillet, then unplug it. It was pretty funny, except for cleaning the big globs of grease off of everything. So no more frying chicken livers for me. Sorry, Tracie, after 3 tries, I decided it wasn't meant to be. I'll have you send me your powder, and I'll send you some tablets--maybe that will work for you! As for asparagus, picked straight from the garden, rinsed, microwave for 3 minutes, with a touch of butter and Mrs. Dash vege seasoning and it is wonderful! You can even add it to the salad and top it with the dressing!!!!!!!!!!!!1 Get a sneak peak of the all-new AOL.com. Missed the show? Watch videos of the Live Earth Concert on MSN.
