To all of the post-ops who are having difficulty in sleeping flat:

Sleeping in a recliner is a good idea, but for those of you who don't

want to do that, here are 3 other things to try:

1. Rent a hospital bed for a few nights. Expensive, but check with

your insurance company, some companies will pay a portion of the

rental fee if the MD says you need the bed. Also, check with local

church and community organizations; these groups sometimes will rent

donated beds for a nominal fee.

2. Cheaper and easier: shove a few extra pillows, blankets or a folded

comforter between the mattress and the box spring. This will elevate

the head of the bed slightly, making it easier for you to sleep and

get out of bed. This also works at the foot of the bed to alleviate

pedal edema. Sofa and chair cushions also work well for this. A medium

sized cardboard box will work on the head of the bed, but tends to

collapse with repeated use; it works best on the foot.

3. The ultimate: buy an electric bed. I was able to do this several

years ago, and it has been WONDERFUL!!! The battery powered remote

control elevates the head and foot as needed. The bed has built in

" massage " which is useful at times. LOL

counting the days until 9/5/01
