Guest guest
we were told by the ped to be 1 year old AND 20 lbs it took until Tori was 2year and 10 months before we turned it around. Just from a safety stand point. Think of all the hard work you have done to get him this far and then to be in an accident and have something happen to him because you turned him around too soon. He doesn't know what it is like to face forward and you can hang like the Elmo mirror so you can watch him in your rear view mirror. It also gives him something to look at. The local fire departments are great at checking car seats to make sure they are safe. They questioned me as to why we were still rear facing then I said we were still under twenty pounds. They were glad that Tori was still rear facing. Plan on throwing a 20 lb party when he reaches the weight! Maloy car seats Hi everyone... I was wondering how long you all kept your kids in the infant car seats? (you know, the ones that face backwards) I know that you are supposed to have an infant facing backwards until they are 12 months old because their spines et are not strong enough to support them in the event of an accident if they are facing forward. I also know that you are supposed to keep them in there until they are 20 lbs. If I do that, Xavier would be in that thing until he was five at the rate he's going. I wouldn't have any problem with it, since it's pretty convenient to be able to keep him in the car seat when we go places, especially since he can't really sit up without support, but the problem is that he is starting to try...kids in those kinds of car seats are babies who are not capable of sitting up, or even attempting it. Xavier is very strong for his size, and can pull himself up to a sitting position if he has something to grab onto. Even with the 5 point harness, he is able to sit up some, and even wiggle one of his shoulders/arm out. I'm concerned that he is going to get hurt this way. Also, since he is deaf, he absolutely hates facing backwards and not being able to see what is going on since he can't hear us. What do you guys do? Keep them in there, or put them in a regular car seat? I know that the convertible car seats are fine for babies too, as long as you keep them facing backward until they are one. I'm just kind of stuck..he's almost 15 months old, but he is the size of a 3 month old. Do I face him forward since he's old enough? His head is steady and he has been supporting it since he was about 3 months old. I don't know if the age/weight restriction is going to apply with him. The forward facing thing is for kids who are under 1, I don't think that the weight has anything to do with which way they face or what kind of car seat they are in. Okay, long and winded, thanks though! Jen Xavier 14months, 13lbs RSS (?) Emerald, 5, Non RSS Wyatt,4, Non RSS
Guest guest
Hi:-) I have to chime in about the car seat issue. We had a lot of trouble with it because Janelle also did not have good head control and her shoulder girdle was still so weak. The non-RSS child is very strong in this area and could withstand a hit and be facing forward. This " call " as to when to switch them is very individualized. We chose and the police station agreed even though she was a good 1 year and 19 lbs. we kept her facing backward until her head control was stronger. Her PT helped us with this decision. What the police said is yeah she's long enough to switch but if I turned her too early (without adequate head control) she would have probably snapped her neck in a crash as opposed to breaking her legs if she was still facing backward. For us it was the lesser of two evils. I just wanted to make the point about the head control and strength throughout the shoulder girdle. Good night from IL where the temperature is very frigid. I can not wait for spring. J

Guest guest
He is a long way from 20 lbs...I guess my question is what is the differnce (length wise) between an infant seat and a convertable? Does that make sense? Are the convertable seats " deeper " so there is more room between the infant seat and the actual car seat for his legs, or are they about the same? Thanks for your responses!!!! > > > > Hi all- > > > > I have a question about infant car seats. Guest guest
Hi, This is my opinion and what I do with my children. Although laws very from state to state I believe some of this is common sense. My older children who are 8 and 10 and weigh up to 80 lbs still sit in booster seats. It just helps the shoulder belt fit correctly. If they sit on the regular seat they get choked by the shoulder strap. They don't mind the boosters because no one can see it from outside the car, they have cup holders, and it sits them up higher so they can see out the windows better. As for the infant seats and the convertable seats. My infant seat had a tag on the side of it that gave the weight and height regulations. At 20 lbs or 26 inches you were to put them into a rear facing convertable car seat. Coby was 1 when he had to change seats. Luckily it was his birthday so we used b-day money and bought him a very nice, extremely expensive car seat. Poor Carlee didn't get that luxurary..hehehe I bought the one that I felt protected him the best, because he didn't have the muscle stregnth that Carlee did. This seat had bike helmet foam all the way around it to help protect him. We kept him rear facing until he got to be about 19 lbs and then we went ahead and turned him around. I too got a little impatient, he was getting bored looking at the back seat and we spend a lot of time in the car. As well as we have a dvd player in the van that I wanted him to be able to see. Babies-r-us is a wonderful resourse and they have all the up to date information on their equipment. Hope this helps. le, mom to: Shye almost 10, Brock almost 8, and Coby (rss) & Carlee NOW
Guest guest
I think they may be a little deeper. Mathieu was 28 1/2 " when we finally turned him around (18 months), and his feet did touch the seat even in the convertible car seat. From what I have been told the legs are still limber enough that even if they get in an accident backwards it should not harm them. The wieght is nthe only differecne between the infant and convertible carseats. The length is probably the same. I used our infant carseat until Mathieu was 17 months old. I have the top model evenflo just bough it about 2 months ago (Bought top line because it was softer and had more cushiion for comfort.) Jay thinking back i am sure it was better leanth wise when we swiched to the convertable kind because they were sitting up cara fairiegirl98 wrote: He is a long way from 20 lbs...I guess my question is what is the differnce (length wise) between an infant seat and a convertable? Guest guest
Hi, We switched Emerence to a backwards facing convertible at 14 months and then forward facing at 18 mo (about 17 lb). Her doctor felt she had signficant enough head and neck control to face forward. Love love love her car seat! It is so very easy to adjust on height, has padding for the head and upper body, can be adjusted as far as sitting upright or rotated more towards horizontal if for a " sleeping " car trip. I have inculded the link and name below. One downside, it is heavy so if you take it in and out or use it to fly a lot it may not be a good choice. I had mine installed by our local police officer trained in car seat installation. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/- /baby/B00009YEHQ/qid=1098326609/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/104-3013589- 1851916 Triumph 5 Comfort Touch Convertible Car Seat with LATCH: Aristotle Other products by Evenflo > > Hi all- > > I have a question about infant car seats. Guest guest
I have heard really great things about that car seat also. Guest guest
Kori, I'm a little late replying to this but you & I sound exactly alike! I've been known to take out a car seat someone has installed & reinstall it tightly & correctly--whether it's for my child or not!!! I don't think people realize what a serious issue this is. I feel like some of the better drivers I know are ones who have been in serious accidents, and see how fast something bad can happen. We're too comfortable in our cars, hurtling down the highway at 75 mph, driving with one knee, talking on the phone, applying mascara & fishing a sippy cup out from under the back seat. For some reason alot of people don't get it--the car seat is the only thing between your baby and serious injury or death. Okay, now I'll get off the soapbox too...hehehe. , mommy of: Guinevere, on, Ava 8/4/04 right CF DBB 23/7 > > > > > The law abotu seats differes from state to state. > > > Call your Highway Patrol office for the laws. Guest guest
Good comments Kori! We also have the 80 lb 5 pt harness car seat for Rachael (5 1/2 yrs). Zoe loves undoing her clip, so she has to wear a bib to cover it up. Seems to take her mind off it.
