Guest guest
had her checkup today with Dr. Herzenberg. He said her feet look great! Dorsiflexion is 20 on both feet. Which he said was very good. was in the s 23/7 for 3 long, long, long months. Finally, we made it! Now here is my question: Dr. H said she only needed to wear them 12 hours now. I was expecting to be reduced to 16. I know 16 is the protocol, so I asked him and he said it isn't necessary. Not even to wear them at naptime. I found this very odd. has had 1 relapse already. I asked him if the 12 hours was enough time not to cause relapse and he looked at me as if I had 3 heads. I'm paranoid, and I don't want another relapse. In addition, I know the normal protocal. is 10 months, not walking yet but pulling herself up to standing. I know 12 hours is usually given after they start walking. Dr. Herzenberg definately knows what he is doing and I have never questioned him before. I plan to leave them on at least 14hours or maybe 16 some days. I called DH after the appointment and told him Dr. H said 14 hours. I had to stretch the truth a little or he will take them off at exactly 12 hours. Let me know your thoughts. and 3/2/04,bcf, s 14 hours?
Guest guest
That's what happened with Naomi as well... we went from 23/7 to night time wear - to quote our ortho surgeon - " as long as she tolerates it. " I emailed Dr. Ponseti some pics and he said that Naomi should be wearing them at least 16 hours a day. I went back to my ortho with that information and she said that it wasn't necessary, that Naomi should be working her legs during the day and during naps... Naomi will be a year old next month and she's still not anywhere near walking (she's standing, but not creeping). We try to keep them on longer during the day now, but Noms is used to having them off as soon as she gets up so we're going to have to try and break her of the habit. Does anyone have any tips on how to soften up a new pair of Markells??? Naomi had such a bad night last night (new bar and boots) and I'm kinda dreading putting them back on tonight... maureen naomi bcf

Guest guest
Hi , We see Dr. Pirani in BC and he comes very highly recommended by Dr. Ponseti. He is part of the Ugandan project and is very dedicated to the method. He has even asked that we show our daughters foot to a patient he treated with surgery before he discovered the Ponseti method and apologized profusly to that patient. We love him and he has done wonders with Grace's foot. He too said that we could reduce to between 12 and 16 hours after she came out of 23/7 wear. I did question him on this asking about 16 hr wear as standard protocol. He said that she would be fine with wearing the shoes within this time frame. I keep the shoes on at least 14 hrs and usually closer to 16. When she is walking I will reduce a bit more. Funny what you said about comment to your DH...I winced as Dr. Pirani said the above as I knew that I wanted to keep her in closer to 16 and Gilles would " follow the doctors orders " and think 12 was OK. He is not on this board as I have been and calls me " the crusader " when he comes upstairs and I am typing, the stinker hehe! I trust Dr. Pirani totally but still for my own piece of mind will err on the side of caution! Congratulation on the reduced hours and have fun suggling your baby!! & Grace 07-21-04 Unilateral RCF DBB 16 hrs > > had her checkup today with Dr. Herzenberg. He said her feet > look great! Guest guest
That's wonderful news! I agree with you on the hours. Guest guest
Hi ! I'm so bummed I missed you guys. The weather was horrible, but we weren't the only family late on Friday. There are 2 families who found out about Dr. H through the support group we organized. Both go to our old doctor we ditched. I didn't get a chance to meet the second one. I met and her husband. Their son was wearing an AFO. Just like had. I hope their appointment was good news. Anyway, a doctor took a picture of the shoes after they were already off. No pictures of 's feet, etc.. I haven't read through all the posts yet, I hope to hear an update about Christian. Shook Retail Operations Manager/Baking Instructor Vie de France Yamazaki, Inc. 2070 Chain Bridge Rd. Guest guest
Thanks . I have met Dr. Pirani at a symposium Dr. Herzenberg did back in September. He actually did 's cast change. He seemed very nice. It is reassuring that he also perscribed 12-16 hours after the 23/7. That is a big spread of hours though. I have been doing about 15 hours daily thus far. I am sooooooo paranoid! Shook Retail Operations Manager/Baking Instructor Vie de France Yamazaki, Inc. 2070 Chain Bridge Rd. Guest guest
Hi , Our appointment wasn't until 11:40. I am sure that you and were long gone by that time. We sat in the waiting room until 1:40 before we were called in! Christian was so tired and cranky at that point I knew it wasn't going to be fun. The only good thing that came out of Friday was the reduced hours. Did cry when Dr. H touched her feet too? Christian started to balance today by himself. He can stand alone for about 10 seconds before he falls on his bottom. I hope this means he will start walking soon. Guest guest
Hi , I find it so odd the Dr. H with such a great reputation would take her down to 12 hours so soon. I have had issues with our Dr. and times he prescribes, so wrote to Dr. P and here is what he had to say. It is basically the same has his website. Quote May 28, 2004 We have observed that after three months of full time brace wear, night and naptime for a total of 16-18 hours are sufficient to prevent a relapse. Once the child is walking about 12-14 hours is adequate. I see no reason to have the child wear the brace 23 hours a day until she is crawling. Straight last shoes are usually more comfortable and are adequate to maintain the correction. Reverse last shoes are not necessary. I.V. Ponseti, M.D. Unquote We are doing 16 right now. is not much younger than Zoe and I bet they will both be walking in the next few months and can have their hours reduced more shortly. Guest guest
Thanks Louisa! I have been averaging about 15-16 hours. !6 more than 15. doesn't know any different, so longer is better IMO. I have mixed feelings about her walking. I want her to walk because I know how great it will be for her feet developing, etc., however, I don't want her to start walking and getting into everything!!!! Plus, I want her to be a baby, not a toddler. They grow too fast!!! Shook Retail Operations Manager/Baking Instructor Vie de France Yamazaki, Inc. 2070 Chain Bridge Rd. Guest guest
I know what you mean! Zoe is our second and it is so funny how NOT anxious I am for her to do the mobile things, I would love for her to be out of the bar longer, but am not ready to chase her around YET. I can't turn my back for a second as it is, she likes to climb on top of low down things and then go head first off the other side. They will both be there before we know it.
