Guest guest
It is my understanding that this method of treatment is very new. It's a great idea to ask Dr. Herzenberg how many he's done and what the success rate is so far. I would also ask him about waiting until the child is older and can have a better understanding about it, but it could be that waiting longer will just mean the child would have to wear it longer, but maybe not much. I would ask to have the names and numbers of some parents whose children went through this treatment so they can give you a sense of what it was like for them. Most likely, your children would be guinea pigs like my daughter was for the doctor who switched to the Ponseti method and my daughter was their first Ponseti patient. Granted, the external fixator is MUCH more intensive than weekly cast changes, but if our doctor had messed up the castings or released my daughter from the shoes too soon, we probably would be facing a relapse and the prospect of needing major surgery. As it was, if I had not found this board and learned the proper Ponseti protocol, I would not have known she was not following it properly. If patients had not been guinea pigs, then the Ponseti method wouldn't have made it this far. If it were me, I would consult with a child psychologist to see what kinds of things could be done to prepare the child ahead of time much like you would for any serious medical condition. I would read stories about what to expect when you go to the hospital. I would write my own story with pictures of the fixator (or a child wearing the fixator if possible) and very simple language explaining what it's all about. I could email you an example of a story about having clubfoot so you could see what I'm talking about. Hope this helps. Best, Joanne W.
