Guest guest
Livi is having another tenotomy or a posterior capsulectomy (if necessary) on 2/15. Here are some questions I have for BTDT parents who have had any type of foot surgery on their baby of this age: She will be 11 mos. old for the surgery. How long does it take baby to wake up after surgery? Do they apply new casts while baby is still under anesthesia? Can baby still cruise/walk with casts on? How long will baby be very fussy? Do they give pain medication to administer at home? Darby Livi 3/15/04 bi cf
Guest guest
darby... my gracie had her first tendon release at 8 months old... she woke up within 15 minutes after surgery... was a little groggy for about 1/2 hour... and was HUNGRY... she's a eater... and to be honest with you... she stood up in the bed at the hospital with the long cast (up to her diaper) on... and she was cruising the furniture when we got home that afternoon... took her a few minutes to figure out how to manuever the cast... but not more than an hour... she was a little cranky the first night... and they rx'd her tylenol with codine... but i didn't give it to her... i just gave her motrin.. and she was fine... and she had the tendon release on her other foot on the 23rd of december (she was 12 months) and same thing... was standing 45 minutes afterwards without a care in the world.... and yes... they should put the cast on while they are still out... now all she had was the Achilles tendon release... no other procedure... so i can't vouch for that... but i know it's harder on me sitting in that waiting room that any of it was on her... good luck.... mommy to Grace 12-03-03 BCF Darby dabrennan@...> wrote: Livi is having another tenotomy or a posterior capsulectomy (if necessary) on 2/15. Guest guest
Darby, As a btdt (and thanks to all our posts I know what that means now) parent, I can say the recovery time varies and they call you back to get her after she is already awake. She will be groggy for awhile. Yes, she will come out of the surgery in casts, they just added the fiberglass right before we left. yes, she will get around almost the next day, cruising and trying to stand, was fussy until we stopped the vallium and other bad drugs. He had a hard time coming out of the pain meds and it made him very cranky. Once we got him back on just tylenol with codiene or just plain tylenol, he did just fine and was his normal happy self. And yes, they usually send you home with stuff. Livi will do just fine. The hardest part is handing her over to the doctors. Bring tissue. Lord bless you and I will keep you in my prayers!!! Hang in there, it's not as bad as you think it will be. Get through it and then get her off the pain meds as soon as possible. She will surprise you! We're all pulling for you! Guest guest
, Thank you for sharing your experience... I'm totally the type of person who has to plan and prepare mentally so I an handle it better. I'm so terrified - I too think the hardest part will be handing her over. I wish the date would just come so we can get it over with! Thanks again! Darby > > > > Livi is having another tenotomy or a posterior capsulectomy (if > > necessary) on 2/15. Guest guest
Thanks ! I was so worried about how long it would be before she could stand up again....it sounds like her will to get around should take over pretty quick. Guest guest
You'll like the fiberglass casts compared to the plaster. When we had to go to two wk healing casts after we got blisters they used fiberglass. They are much lighter and just easier to handle I thought. Also, Aidan had alot of swelling after we came out of the plaster casts. His swelling actually all went down in the fiberglass and we had no swelling when we went back into the shoes. Guest guest
Darby, Kelsey had her tenotomy done under general anesthesia when she was just shy of 12 months old. It did not take her long to wake up but she did seem to be in pain when she woke up. They gave her some Tylenol and some more fentanyl, which was the pain medication they had given her during surgery. I rocked her for a little while until that took effect and then she fell asleep. Then, they took out her IV and sent her home. She threw up one time on the way home but we do have an hour's drive from the hospital. Once we got home, she slept for about 5 hours, woke up, ate a light supper and went back to sleep for the night after another dose of Tylenol. They did not give us anything stronger but she really did not need it after the fentanyl injection in the hospital.. She was fine the next day, no longer even requiring the Tylenol. The Doctor did put her cast on during surgery so she woke up with it on and she was able to maneuver in it pretty well. She actually took her first solo steps while wearing the cast. I have no experience with the capsulectomy so hopefully someone else can help you with that information. Good luck. Guest guest
Oh my! We had the plaster and then reinforced with the plaster. Double duty, every time. that must have been a lot lighter! He would wake often crying and I had to give him pain medication at night. We gave him some right after the surgery and then only at night when he seemed to be in the most pain. and bilateral cf dbb 23/
