Guest guest
I'm not really a " weight nazi " or anything like that! But there are some good reasons for paying attention to the percentile...your baby should on average stay within a certain percentile. In other words, whatever is " normal " for them...if they're in the 75th percentile at birth, then they should be that or close to at 1 mo, 3 mos, 6 mos, etc...there's always growth spurts and such, but it's a good general guide. The percentile guides actually are fairly old, and pretty outdated. We know more now about how to feed our babies, and what to do to ensure a healthy baby when we're pg than our moms & grandmoms did 40+ years ago, so on the whole our babies are bigger than they were back then when the charts were made. So an " average " (50th percentile) baby back then is smaller than the " average " baby now-a- days. So basically we're comparing our children to an outdated standard, is all that means. But it is a good guide for parents & doctors, and while you may not realize it, chances are your doc is recording it in your son's medical records. But believe me, I do gauge my daughter's health more on the size and number of the rolls on her thighs than anything else! And according to those aforementioned rolls--she's a healthy baby! Guest guest
My pediatrician has always told us that is only important that her size stay in similar proportions. is in the 5th percentile for height and weight but it would become problematic if those were way out of synch with each other because then there would be underweight/overweight issues etc. That is the only reason I pay attention. And our pediatrician does chart them in her record to track growth. Jenni wrote: >I'm not really a " weight nazi " or anything like that! Guest guest
yeah, my dr does keep track of it all, that's why I never worry about where he's at. he looks good, he acts good, he feels good, he's growing, and my dr knows where he's at, good enough for me! I know what rate is good for him and I don't get caught up in how he compares with other babies. I am thankful the drs keep track of that, and he's growing just fine. He's always been smaller and behind in everything so it got old comparing him to friends babies when they wanted to talk about percentiles...I just stopped worrying about it. You can tell when they aren't eating well or gaining what they should be or gaining too fast. yeah, my son's rolls all got caught up in his cheeks. my son weighs 20 lbs and 10 of it's in his cheeks! > > > > > HI all, > > > > > Everett had a well baby check up today.
