Guest guest
When my family was over for Thanksgiving my son Simon (almost 3) was very social. He would look people in the eye and try to talk to them and dance around happily. Of course no one knew what he was saying but i was just glad he was less scared of people than last year. The whole afternoon he was saying what sounded like " oh yeah! " and everyone thought it was so cute. I was trying to be happy that it was two words together, but I kept trying to think of where he had heard it, because i dont say it that often. I wracked my brain for what TV show it came from and finally figured out which one. it was a new episode of Oobi i had taped to help him learn the fruit. He was acting out the show for people in his motions and sing-songy way. And all we got out of it was " oh yeah! " I felt really bad for him that he was trying so hard to communicate but had to again go back to things from a show that were scripted. This sounds like delayed echolalia from what ive read on this board, but does that go with Apraxia? or is it more on the autism spectrum? i have a developmental pediatrician i am going to with him in the next month or so, i guess we'll see what she says. we always chalked it up to " he's practicing " and at least he is talking. and sometimes i can turn it into an original thought. if he says " elmo's daddy " eventually it became " simon's daddy " (not clearly but close enough. should i embrace the scripted dialogue? i am so torn, i really like hearing him talk but it hurts that either thats the only thing he knows i will recognise, or that he cant say anything original easily... thoughts?
