Re: Flying question & shoe question--contains a plug

When we flew with Jonah in the FAB, the only issue was going through security

since, of course, we set off the alarm. The guard actually had me hand Jonah

over to my husband before we went through the detector so that they wouldn't

have to call over a male security guy to wand him and a female for me. In any

case, no big deal.

As far as shoes go, I don't think Dr Ponseti is just being old-fashioned. He

does recommend that children go bare-footed as much as possible, but encourages

the use of a flexible soled shoe that offers good ankle support for the first

year or so of walking.

Jonah usually wears a pair of Robeez around the house. These are all-leather

slipper type shoes. My nearly 4-year-old insisted on wearing Robeez pretty much

exclusively for a long time, she'd just pull on a pair of rainboots over them

when it was wet out. Jonah also has a pair of Elefanten " El Chico " walkers.

These are really lightweight and have a nice flexible sole. This allows that

forward heel-to-toe rolling. They also provide support to the ankle, but still

allow it to move. They do not have " arch support " , so they don't mess with the

natural development of the arches. They do have a heel pocket--something like

on the Markells--and a slight indentation in the heel of the footbed so that the

foot stays well seated in the shoe. I think they are wonderfully engineered.

Though you have to pay for that engineering: they run upwards of $50. I see

pairs, new in the box, listed on eBay for far less than that though. (And no, I

do not work for Elefanten!) Jonah seems to be

very comfortable in his shoes. But then, he loves wearing shoes, any shoes.

Stride Rite makes great shoes(their stores also carry Elefanten) and are a good

place to go get fitted for shoes--ask them to use the WMS fitting device if they

have it(this is a device that measures not only length but also width and how

" tall " the ball of the foot is).

A couple of other high-end brands that I have spent time looking at, but haven't

put on my children are: Primigi, Aster and BabyBotte. I admit, I'm a bit of a

snob about shoes, but I think that a good shoe is a good investment--especially

for my clubfoot guy.

Hey, I know this was discussed a little bit before, and as far as I

remember there was no major concerns with flying when baby is in the

DBB 23/7, right? We're flying next week, and I just wanted to check

again with everybody.

Also, with the shoes once they're out of the DBB 23/7: Dr. P

recommends a hi-top walking shoe? Is this because they have CF? I

know that used to be the recommendation years ago, I had a hard time

with my MIL when my first started walking because she kept telling

me that's what I should get. But now they say that's not really

necessary, actually the opposite because it provides too much

support for their ankles & doesn't allow them to learn to balance on

their own & develop strength in their ankles. So I guess my real

question is, do they really need that type of shoe because they have

CF, or is that just " old-school " thinking on Dr. P's part? I'm not

trying to sound snotty I'm just wondering. Ava will be out of her

DBB full time in another month, so I'm wondering what type of shoes

to get her (or shoes at all, maybe just bare piggies is better?).

Plus she'll only be 7 months, not ready to walk yet, so does that

make a difference?

Thanks,

I don't understand why you would recommend no shoes most of the time and high

top

supportive shoes when out...they seem like two extremes. I don't know if that

makes

sense, but to me if it's better for your child to be barefoot, then that's

better. I would just

put flexible little shoes on, basically to protect the baby's soles.
