I know that if it goes untreated it can be very bad. But I am not terribly

familiar with it.

The full name is Respiratory Syncytial Virus, so you can look it up

online. From my understanding it can be pretty bad in infants and

after having it once they are prone to getting it again. One thing

though that I remember reading is it's like a common cold in older

children and adults so they don't know they have it and then they

pass it on to a baby and the baby will get it. I know the best way to

prevent it is wash your hands before touching a baby and there is an

injection that babies can get if they are at a high risk of getting

it and it's not always covered by insurances. I hope your nephew gets

better.

My youngest who was born in April 2004 caught RSV last winter (June/July/Aug in

Australia). We refer to it as bronchialitis. He was hospitalised, but it seemed

to cause him more distress. While in hospital he went off his feeds and became

dehydrated. He did not sleep properly. The nurses do routine checks every 1/2

hour which disturbed him. None of the nursing staff or respiratory dept had

come across a baby wearing the DBB and I got 100 annoying questions. We ended

up convincing the hosp that he would be better at home. Which he was. Mummy

knows best!

During the winter period he had 3 cases of bronchialitis and 1 case of croup

which he was given some oral steroids to make his lungs a little stronger. It

affects all children differently my neice also had it, she was 6 months old, did

not go off her feeds, slept normally and did not need to go to hospital.

I have attached a link from baby centre for further reading.

Hope the little one gets better soon.

RSV is an upper respitory infection and can be deadly if not caught in time.

Basically, as the infection gets worse it becomes harder and harder for the

child to breath. Eventually, from the strain and effort they just stop! :-(

That is actually, one of the reasons I decided to stay home with Aidan. As a

preemie he's very susptible and it could have definitely done him in. We go

every 28 days for an RSV shot for high risk infants. The scary thing about it,

is that it can go undiagnosed just as a cold for awhile, then it's too late.

IT " S VERY SERIOUS and we're right in the middle of the season!
