Guest guest
I know most of you are aware we've been struggling with putting his feet flat. Drs don't want to recast him because developmentally we lost a lot of ground. But I was just wondering if any kids here had walking casts. Thats where the cast goes just below the knees and jason would still be able to crawl, stand up and hopefully start walking. I just didn't know the chances of it staying on that young or if anyone had had experience with this. I will be calling Dr. P on monday, but I wanted to get people's input first. I'm kinda at my wits end with what to do for him. He needs something sturdy to keep his feet flat and ankle from tiptoeing. Dr. P hasn't liked any of the AFO's they've come up with here and he hasn't had anything designed over there that he likes. The mitchell shoes made special still bend in the back and allow to tip toe. Any thoughts? Thanks, jason atypical bl cf 10-09-
Guest guest
, I have no experience with the walking casts. I just wondered if jason had ever had an MRI done or anything to rule out neurological problems? I know tiptoe walking is a sign of some other things. Just curious (I have gone throught this too). Also with the developmental delays I was curious about wether the two were related. I guess The Drs dont want to do another tenotomy because they don't want in the cast afterwords? Guest guest
They don't want to do another tenetomy because he's already had two major surgeries. What other things is tiptoeing a sign of? I wasn't aware of that. The developmental delays is not anything mental it's all just physically he will not put pressure on his feet. Since he had his relapse and was put back in casts, since those came off from Ponseti, he will not stand flat footed. He was so far behind walking and pulling up because he was in casts the entire first year. So he's never really gotten the chance to build up his muscles which we are working on. But since getting this last set of casts off from ponseti, he simply won't put his feet down. he's trying to walk, but he does it all on his tiptoes and not at all without the shoes on. Guest guest
Kai had walking casts on his cf when he was casted last February. They were correcting cavus, not anything else, so Dr Mosca felt the short cast would be ok, and it would accomodate his newly emerging walking skill. It took him a couple days to get used to lifting and balancing it, but soon he did just fine and was walking all around in it! Angel Walking casts? Guest guest
Hi Alcia- I just sent an email to your pesonal account before I read this. I'm confused, was walking before the last set of casts??? Did he cruise with flat feet on the ground prior to the last set of casts??? It looks like he is only 15 months old and I didn't think that was considered physically delayed for walking. My girlfriend first two boys (non CF) didn't walk until 15 months and the doctors never said anything about it to her about being late walkers or anything. I also thought the whole walking timeframe was rather heriditary. My sons (one CF one non CF) both walked at 10 months and so did my husband and I when we were little. Were you or your husband late walkers???? > > I know most of you are aware we've been struggling with putting > his feet flat. Guest guest
Before Kai went into his casts would he straighten his legs while putting his feet flat? After more thought, I am thinking they would have to go past his knee to ensure the " whole leg " stretch. Unless your son wouldn't straighten his leg either... alicia > Kai had walking casts on his cf when he was casted last February. Guest guest
no, he wasn't walking yet, but he would stand with his legs straight and his feet flat, putting weight on them. He had started taking steps. Now, he will pull himself up, finally, but if in the shoes with the bar, he will stand on his very tiptoes without putting his feet flat unless forced. When forced, he will bend his knees immediately. When we force those straight and make him stand up with his butt in, he will scream and scream. When he's in his free standing special shoes, he simply won't put that left foot down unless forced. Technically he's still got to 18 months before they start worrying about why he isn't walking, but because of the way he is " not walking " they are very worried. We know the feet are not fully corrected, but we are wondering why he wont' straighten his leg. I know when I straighten mine and have my foot at a 90 angle, it's a much harder stretch than just a free foot. So is there a problem with the back of his legs or leg, that just needs to be in a straight leg stretch for a while? > > > > I know most of you are aware we've been struggling with > putting > > his feet flat. Guest guest
Just to help me think about it more , if he will lay his feet flat with shoes on, why not just leave his shoes on most the time right now rather than bare footed? s. They don't want to do another tenetomy because he's already had two major surgeries. What other things is tiptoeing a sign of? I wasn't aware of that. Guest guest
We do, he isn't ever barefooted except for bath time and 1/2 hour to get him used to me playing with his feet. He will put his feet flat when forced, in the shoes, but even then he will not straighten his legs out. At all. Believe me, he is hardly ever barefoot. they have even stopped taking his shoes off in therapy because of that. But for him to put his feet flat in his shoes, you have to force him and he screams. it's just easier to get him to do it with his shoes on. does that make sense? me > Just to help me think about it more , if he will lay his feet flat with shoes on, why not just leave his shoes on most the time right now rather than bare footed? > s. > > > They don't want to do another tenetomy because he's already had two > major surgeries. Guest guest
The way you describe it it sounds like his heel hurts. My has stiff heels and can hardly squat or bend at the waist to touch his toes although as he ages this seems to be improving a little bit. He can " bear walk " now (hands and feet on floor) - something he flat out could not do two years ago. When he was in PT (between ages 6 months and 2 years), she kept trying to get him to peddle a bike/trike to work on stretching the heel area. have they xrayed the foot? Why are they reluctant to do another heel cord procedure? s.

Guest guest
That's what we do every time we force him to stand flat footed with his knees straight and he just screams. I know that's not normal. I also know this is new since coming out of these last set of casts to correct the relapse. yes he screamed, but not like this, and we could always get him to stand flat with his legs straight, even after coming out of the surgery casts. Now he won't do it all. I'm calling dr. p this morning in a couple of hours as soon as it's 8 over there. I got about 45 minutes...start praying for good ideas to pop into that brilliant head of his! Thanks ee, I appreciate your words! > > Just to help me think about it more , if he will lay his feet > flat with shoes on, why not just leave his shoes on most the time > right now rather than bare footed? > > s. > > > > > > They don't want to do another tenetomy because he's already had two > > major surgeries. Guest guest
Not an issue we had; but if has been in casts for a long time (I cant remember) then he may just need muscle stretches. Remember back in school doing toe-touches where half the class could not reach their toes without bending the knee? It sounds like it is a similar thing, and I dont think a cast would be the correct way to fix it (too sudden) Angel Walking casts? > > > > I know most of you are aware we've been struggling with putting > his feet flat. Guest guest
OK , maybe I'm really off base here, and if so I'm sorry. But I've been wishing that I could say something to help you and , and this just occured to me. You say that he was in casts the whole first year of his life. Most children, it takes them that whole year to " learn " to walk--it's not just those few weeks where they're balancing & taking their first steps, but it's all the weeks and months prior to that where they " discover " their feet, then balance on your leg, and crawl and on and on...all that is " learning " to walk in a sense...got me? So he's really a whole year behind, and I don't think you should expect him to make up that whole year in just a few weeks, right? I don't think you'd expect him to start chewing on his toes like a 5 month old, but developmentally (at least with his feet) that may be where he is, or even less. And I know my daughter when she first started walking would go on tippy toes alot, I've seen other children to the same thing. I was just sitting here remembering her tippy-toeing around the house with her little push toy before she walked on her own. I know is a special case but maybe the tippy toes thing is just him working into it? He hasn't really been out of casts for that long if I remember correctly. Has he made ANY progress at all? I'm sorry if this isn't helpful at all, but I just want you to know that I read all your posts, and I really feel for you guys. , mommy of: Guinevere, on, Ava 8/4/04 right CF DBB 23/7 > > , I have no experience with the walking casts. Guest guest
, I just thought of something else too...if he spent all those months in bent leg casts, isn't it possible that the muscles in the back of his leg are painful when he straightens it? Maybe they cramp or stretch--I'm thinking about for myself, I can stand just fine, but if I try to bend over & touch my toes, the muscles (hamstrings??) hurt like you know what! Because I'm trying to force them further than they're used to, you know... SHannon > > > > > > I know most of you are aware we've been struggling with > > putting > > > his feet flat.
