Hi,

Ive got a 9wk old daughter with Talipes of her right foot. The first

3 casts she did really well with her bottle and didnt scream.

However the last 2-3 casts she has been screaming really bad when

they manipulate her foot and put on the casts. Ive tried giving her

the bottle but she wont have it and just screams so bad she nearly

chokes on it. A dummy isnt working either.

She is getting herself in a right state during casting and its

starting to worry me. She needs extra casting because she keeps

escaping/slipping from the casts due to Atypical foot.

I am keeping her unfed before the cast, but it doesnt work anymore.

She still wont calm down.

I dont understand as she used to be so good during casting.

Any tips appreciated

My son would scream and scream during the castings too and he was

casted by dr ponseti. At first I could soothe him by singing to him,

but then nothing would work. I started giving him benedryl and some

tylenol. The benedryl helped take the edge off for him and he would

become so exhausted from the med and from screaming he would fall

asleep. I recommend giving her just a touch. It reallly helped us

and in helping to relax him, they were able to get good casts on.

before his surgery, Dr. ponseti casted him for 8 1/2 weeks 13 times.

Hope this helps,

My daughter would scream until she threw up! Literally everytime!

She would get so worked up. The technician and others doctors were like,

uh-oh, is here today. We need ear plugs! No joke, I bet other

people thought she was being completely tortured. I tried everything to

calm her down, but nothing worked. She would eventually calm herself down

after the new casts were completely applied and we were on our way home.

Then she was fine and happy again. Every baby is different. My only tip

is to whisper and console in her ear during the casting, then give big

hugs afterwards.

My son didn't like being casted either. I always tried to make sure

he was well-fed before. The doctor's assistant used to give him

things to play with to distract him, sometimes that worked.

My son screamed every single time he was casted. Even now when they size

him for shoes or the doctor just touches them he screams like crazy!

Our doctor recommended feeding him during castings. I always brought a

bottle of pumped breast milk and he did really well. Hope that helps! Lori

I did this with too. I expressed some mik the day before the casting

and popped the bottle in just before the manipulation and casting began. I

also made sure he was hungry at the time... a few times during his casting he

was gulping the bottle down during the manipulation and by the time she got

one foot plastered he was fast asleep!!

We aslo wrapped up around the top half of his body so his arms

were close to is body and it made him feel secure... thats probably why he fell

asleep at the physio's regulaly!
