Guest guest
I am hoping you guys can help me. Sidney has a right CF with 2 missing outside toes, so her foot is narrower. She's wearing a Markells size 000 on that foot. She was doing well with keeping her shoes on for her 12 hours (night). Lately though, she's been slipping out of it. The hole at the ankle part is so narrow it looks impossible to get out of. We are tying it as tight as we can and pulling the strap as tight as we can and she's getting out every night. When she first started wearing them she kept them on, then it was 1x or 2x a week she would get out, now it is every night. Thought it was the moleskin padding we inserted, so we took that out last night. Put her to bed @ 8p and by 10p she had already weasled out of it. Any ideas??? Thanks, Amy Digest Number 2211
Guest guest
Amy, Have you talked to your doctor about getting a custom molded shoe for Sidney, such as the sandals? Since her foot is shaped differently with the missing toes, perhaps a custom molded boot/sandal would work better for her. Also, are you sure that she hasn't lost any correction in her foot allowing the heel to not seat all the way down in the shoe? When the foot isn't corrected, the child can get it out of the shoe easier. Does she have the Markell shoes with the padded ankle area? Perhaps there is a " narrow " size Markell shoe available also?? You could print out the shoe size chart off the Markell website and see if you think she's in the right size shoe. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!! Guest guest
They do have a narrow Markell now. You know them by their sizing such as size 000N as opposed to size 000M which is the standard one most people get. And... what said... I'd check correction too. Also, make sure the bar length is right. If it has got too small it might be assisting the foot coming out. If you haven't already, try elongating the tongue keeper slit and pulling the tongue down so that it sits under the top of the boot. Then after you've got the strap as tight as possible cinch up the ankle with the laces really tight. That might help. Let us know if anything works. I'm curious, it seems like you just posted with pictures of her foot in the past few months so she's still pretty young. Did she do 23/7 for 3 mo's and then dropped to 12hr/d immediately after that? If so, I'd be really concerned about correction (and with her size being 000 she can't be over a year old yet right?). I didn't reduce Darbi's hours to 12 till she was about 15mo's old and still, I often keep her shoes on for 13 or 14 depending on the day. I do believe in the long bracing times and *not* reducing to 12 hours till much after walking. It seems that Sidney might benefit from following the recommended protocol for hours (18, 16, 14, and finally 12 after walking) rather than expecting her slightly different clubfoot to respond to modifications that are known to not be beneficial to a normal clubfoot. Sorry, but I'm starting to get really freaky over all these docs who think they're doing us a favor by reducing the hours. If they want to do us a favor, tell us to brace the child when they're young and it's easy rather than delivering the child to a relapse. Guest guest
Thanks, we are going to try slitting the tongue. The bar length is good, I've measured it. She went to the doctor today and he doesn't seem too concerned. The correction is holding. However, if she keeps kicking it off within hours of going to bed, we are to call him and work on a solution. She is 7 mos old now - she went through a lot of casting w/ the first doctor and then we switched the one she is seeing now. It took about 3 casts to finish correction. Anyway..she was on 18 hrs initially for about a month and then down to 12 since. I questioned the reduction and he pointed out since her problems are a bit different than " normal " clubfoot that it should be ok. He's going to do some x-rays next time to check on her bone growth, placement, etc. Thanks for all of your advice. This group is a godsend! Amy B. > > > I am hoping you guys can help me.
