Guest guest
Hi friends, I am about two weeks behind in reading digests due to some personal health problems . . . but a couple of questions have come up this week and I am hoping someone won't mind replying to me directly today off-list to BJBlackler@... I will combine all responses and send to the list tomorrow so the list doesn't get clogged. Thanks. We've had our first infringements at preschool this week. My son's teacher is great, and tries her hardest to be compliant with the GFCF regimen when it comes to food items . . . (the GFCF diet is in our IEP) but when it comes to non-food items, we are like the blind leading the blind in this area. Since last Friday we've had reactions to: 1) a sticker that was placed on my son's face (adhesive containing gluten perhaps?) which left an angry red circle on his skin for the entire weekend and he was very cranky/no appetite 2) band-aid . . . and 3) . . . my son came home yesterday very cranky with dark circles under having cream.his eyes, and he reeked of men's cologne or aftershave. Well, not only was I concerned that he had been exposed to someone's cologne, I was also worried on a larger scale because, to the best of my knowledge, all of his teachers, therapists, bus aides, etc. are female! So my note to the teacher this morning questioned who he had come into such close contact with! Turns out his OT was using shaving cream with the kids yesterday . . . so I guess shaving cream is suspect now, too?! Any other thoughts on non-food substances that I need to make the school aware of? So far I've listed: -soap -glue -papier-mache paste -fingerpaints -playdough -lotions -toothpaste -perfume/cologne -sticky-backed materials -and now shaving cream Does anything else come to mind? I've tried to let the school know of safe alternatives (Elmer's Glue, for instance) and I do supply homemade playdough and fingerpaints for the class . . . Also . . . what are your thoughts about transdermal exposure to gluten and/or casein? Does this kind of infringement affect our kids differently, as it doesn't go through the digestive process? Thanks in advance for everyone's replies. After making such a huge deal about this diet to the school, I hope I can give them a comprehensive list of non-food items! -BJ in polis, MD The school has asked me to come up with a list of no-no items (non-food) so they can avoid exposing my son.
