Guest guest
Hi, revisiting the board after some time. I think I know what they mean by not " tolerating " the bar. My son Micah has bilateral clubfoot. We have been with Dr. Colburn (Ponsetti doc in Walnut Creek, CA) since he was three months old. Dr. Ponsetti saw his feet and was happy with the correction. Micah did alright with the bar until I stopped nursing at twelve months. He used to wake up and I would get him to go back to sleep with nursing. Now he wakes up and screams and tries and suometimes succeeds to pull the bar off. So far the only way I can keep the bar on is to take out the tongues (at least with his new large bar with size one shoes). Last night he screamed like never before and I finally took it off at 3 am. He is now nineteen months. Tonight I will try the new shoes with the tongues from his old shoes, because I think it may not be too comfortable without any tongues. The new tongues are padded and he slips right out with them in. We saw the doctor a few days ago and he says no relapse and no blisters or sores, but we have to keep the bar on ten hours a night. Do I just let him scream for hours? He doesn't just cry, he really gets hysterical. It's horrible to hear and I am not a fan of " cry it out " . Priya. Guest guest
Priya, I really feel for you. My little guy, Jonah, is also 19 months. A couple of weeks ago he was waking up every night crying and asking us to take his shoes off(and eventually working at least one foot out). It's very hard to say: " No, buddy, you have to wear them " when he's obviously so miserable. I know that hysterical crying--there's not much worse than that in all the world for me as his Mom. And I am very far from being a fan of letting babies cry it out. I think you are in good hands with Dr Colburn. Did he check the length of the bar when you went in a few days ago? With Jonah we wound up getting him a longer bar and he has been fine since then. Does it sound like Micah is in pain? Or is it more of a frustrated cry? Does he let you put the shoes on with no fight and then wake up crying later on? I take it that holding him, rocking him, walking around with him, none of that helps. Does the same thing happen if you have him wear the FAB at naptime? Have there been big changes in your household recently that may be impacting him? Our nearly 4 year old(no clubfoot) has frequent nightmares when she is going through transitions, growth spurts, leaps in cognitive development, and so on. I truly wish I could be more help here. Hopefully tonight goes a little better and you both get some rest. And hopefully this all goes away pretty quickly. By the way, are you in the SF Bay area? We are in the Eureka/Arcata area, on the North Coast. Guest guest
Thanks for the support regarding Micah. He has been doing somewhat better with the bar, and I have been clear with making him wear it. I have been locked out of my computer because of something he did to the keyboard and now I can't find the reply to my original message. I put the bar on him at 9pm. Sometimes he will sleep until midnite and then start wanting it off. Last night he got really mad when I put it on him and got out of it twice. Generally he is waking up and crying every hour with the bar. He does have some red marks on the top of one foot, which makes me think the bar is on too tight, but then he gets out of it which makes me think its too loose. I hope this improves because we have a long way to go until he is three years old. He usually does ok with it on for a nap, but that is only about an hour. I don't know if he is ever going to really accept the situation...Priya.
