I have 5 cats and a dog, who were all in my bed while I was pregnant. They

have all been WONDERFUL with my baby (now almost 6 months old) My dog too was my

baby but we got her a bed and made a big deal out of it and put a treat in it

for her every night. She started just sleeping in her bed at the foot of our

bed. She is so good about it she will not come into my lap unless the baby is

napping or a sleep for the night. I just suggest making sure your pets still

feel special but giving them boundaries.

Good Luck!

I had a cousin who had a per Wienie dog who was her baby for 9 years

before she had any kids. That dog eat, breathed and slept when she

did. After the baby was born, the dog was incredibly jealous and

would growl at the baby. They started putting the dog in the spare

bedroom at night rather than in the bed with them. When the baby was

about a month old the dog (whom she never left alone with the baby)

got into the nursery where the baby was and bit the baby. Needless to

say, the dog was given away immediately.

Animals can be extremely jealous, so I'd start working on the problem

now.

Mabel, I have a little pug dog that is 10 years old and always sleeps with me

even when the baby was in bed with me. I just maek Reba sleep at the bottom

or in between me and hubbys hip area. She has been fine with baby. Just break

your dog slowly into having a baby and let the dog SHARE the baby with you so

theya re FRIENDS and they should be fine. I see NO NEED to remove the dog from

your bed at all. This is just my Opinion, Others may disagree but i ahve had

animals all my life and they are just like my kids too, VERY SPOILED, LOL....

God Bless,

Mabel why do you have to leave him out of the bed? My dogs slept with me

while I was pregnant (one of them weighed 130 pounds and one 30 pounds). The

big concern isn't them sleeping with you so much as getting them prepared

for baby's arrival so they are not jealous of baby.

Hi Mabel,

We have 2 dogs - a German Shephard and a Besenji and 5 cats. The German

Shephard sleeps with us and the Besenji does not. Also we usuall have 3 out of

5 cats in our bed....and my hubby and half the time our 4 year old son.

Our pets are very good with our 4 year old and have been with us since before he

was born.

I would do what you think is best, but a poodle doesn't really take up much room

in the bed.

Mabel,

I have two maltese dogs and they sleep with us too. I don't plan on removing

them from our bed but do plan on getting them used to the baby. I let them in

the nursery when I am in there and let them sniff around and smell the baby

stuff. We will do our best to introduce them to the baby but don't want to push

them out of the picture since they have been they babies around here for awhile.

Best wishes to you!!

I have a 16 year old poodle (that was my baby before my first child

was born). She sleeps with me, sits next to me wherever I am and is

my constant companion - whether I want her under me or not. I think

because she is older now she is more attached than ever. I never

thought of putting her out of our bed because it was just as much

hers since she's never slept anywhere else. My poodle is a female

and I think there is a difference between male dogs and females as

far as temperment goes.

When Cole was born she just took it all in. I actually talked to

her about a baby coming to live at our house - thinking she would

understand. I was very careful when leaving him near her at first

because I was uncertain and had read " the stories " of dogs being

jealous, etc. She only loved him and licked him when I let her to

share her love with him. Keka has always been a loving pet though

and has never tried to bite anyone.

I think you have to make a judgement on your own dog and then

decide. I would have never given my pet away even if she had shown

some anger - I would have found an expert to help us work through

any jealousy she had toward the baby if that had been the case. She

has been with me 16 years and is just a part of the family. She

does still sleep with me - even though during a time of urinary

incontience I tried to train her to sleep in a cage - an aweful time

that didn't work because all she could does was cry and yell and

kept me up feeling guilty. I learned that my dog did love my child

as much as she loved me and plays with him now (he's 3) and we

couldn't imagine life without her - even though the day will come.

Good luck! I can certainly say it's easier to teach a new dog to

sleep somewhere besides in the bed but it's the most difficult thing

to try to remove one after all the years of sleeping with you.

I think your pets will do just fine. My aunts dog was petrified of

this little thing that cried all the time but she let the dog sit by

her on the couch while she was holding the baby and she pet him at

the same time. A week of that and the dog was fine! Now the dog is

very protective of the toddler and if he cries, he runs to find my

aunt.

I understand the concern. I have two cats that have been my pretty

baby kitties and I also wonder what it will be like for them. I

think I've heard too many horror stories about pets, but non of them

have been proven true by any of the animal owners I know that have

new babies.

Just take things slowly and gradually with your pets and I'm sure

everyone will adjust fine!
