I know a couple of teachers who you could correspond with. One teaches in

Canada and the other here in Oregon. Both are online friends and I'm sure

would be more than happy to answer any questions you have. Good luck!

I am a certified teacher in NJ, although I only taught for a year in public

school before my first son was born, and I have stayed home since then. I did

not go alternate route, but I will try to answer any questions you have. You can

email me.

Thanks for replying Lynda and ! I'm not quite sure where to

start, I have a BS in Business Administration, I'm currently in

forensic accounting, I am certified to substitue, I haven't done it

in years though. I would like to go into teaching, preferably the

alternate route, but I don't really know what to do first. If I

should take the Praxis 2 test or anything like that first, or first

contact schools. Also since my degree in in Business and not

liberal arts I wasn't sure if that would be a problem for most

schools, I would like to teach elementary or middle school level.

Michele... do u have a degree in teaching right now? If not, you are going to

have to obviously get that... But I know here in Florida, u can get a job while

u are working on your degree if it is in a critical shortage area (ex. my friend

teaches h.s. math which is a critical shortage area here, and is still working

on her degree while teacing). Some other critical shortage areas are science and

special ed.... A good idea would be to start substituting as soon as possible so

that you can get your foot in the door with some schools while u are finishing

off all of your credits. I hope this helps.

Thanks Kori! I thought if we go ahead with the external fixator for

Collin and I take off for a few months, maybe I should just

permantly take off and do the career change now, I've been thinking

about it for so long!!!

Hi -

I taught in NJ. It's pretty easy to get a certificate there once

you have your degree. I'm not sure how to go about the alternate

route, but a great place to start would be contacting either your

local school district or the State Dept. of Education (I believe I

obtained my certificate from the county dept of ed in Hunterdon),

either of these can lead you in the right direction and tell you

what you'll need to do. I saw you said you'd like to teach

elementary or middle school, but with your degree and experience in

accounting and buisness you could also look into teaching high

school level business or accounting classes, I taught special ed. at

the high school level and it was great. I've been out of teaching

for almost 5 years now, since my first son was born, I'm looking to

go back to teaching this September since both my boys will now be in

preschool. If you have any questions you can e-mail me directly. I

hope it all works out for you. I know I'm looking forward to being

on the same schedule as my boys and not having to put them in

daycare program before and after school.
