Subject: Helping farmworkers in Alabama

Cecily of Telamon, Virginia in conjunction with Mechill Coel of

Telamon Alabama has found a way to help farmworkers in the Mobile area.

Below are the details of how you can join the effort and maybe get others to

do the same. Here is her message:

Many thousands of people are affected by by Hurricane Katrina as you all

know. However, some of you may not know the profound effect it is likely to

have on the region's farmworkers.

Many of the area's farmworkers live in temporary migrant camps or trailer

parks in rural areas. As with all victims of the hurricanes, they have lost

everything. Their homes, their work, some have lost their families.

But the effect on them could be even greater because of the tenuous nature

of their lifestyle and work. They may not have identification and proof of

residency or documentation to prove their income and the location of where

they were working. Growers understandably concerned with their own

devastation will likely not have time to help their temporary workers prove

their personal situations.

The fact that few of them speak English will further separate them from the

thousands seeking aid. If they can't communicate with the aid worker, then

they will have to wait for a translator, and with so many others asking for

help, they will get left behind.

The lack of this important documentation coupled with their isolation in

very rural areas will mean that most will not find assistance or be found

eligible for emergency assistance, rebuilding assistance, and disaster

compensation. This, coupled with the likelihood that there is a limited

social support network for them in the area, means that they will continue

suffering with the effects of the storm long after emergency aid gets to

other citizens in the community.

I am explaining this in detail because I feel compelled to ask you to

consider joining me in donating to the Telamon Corporation office in Mobile,

Alabama so that they can serve those who might not otherwise receive

emergency assistance. I don't expect them to get a lot of money out of this

endeavor, but every dollar we donate will help get one more gallon of milk

or one more night in a hotel for those who had next to nothing before the

storm and now are faced with no home, no income, and no options.

Although the roof was blown off of the Telamon office in Mobile, services to

farmworkers will continue. 100% of the money you donate will go to the

victims.

Any amount you can spare will go a long way in helping to get farmworkers

through this devastating tragedy.

Please make your check payable to:

Telamon Corporation

3937 Western Blvd

Raleigh, NC 27606

and write ALABAMA in the comments section.

Thanks for your consideration.

Forward this message to anyone you think would be interested. Thank you.
