Guest guest
Hi We live in NJ too, and we see Dr. Feldman. My daughter Chelsea had atypical clubfoot, and Dr. Feldman was sort of at a loss of what to do, so we ended up going to Dr. Ponseti for additional casting at 8 months and a second tenotomy when she was about 1 year old. We are still seeing Dr. Feldman for follow-up visits. I am keeping in touch with Dr. Ponseti too. We just saw Dr. Feldman this week for Chelsea's 2-yr checkup. He said that his ATTT procedure rate was more like 30% after using the Ponseti method. And as a result he is recommending using the brace until age 4. Also Dr. Feldman told Chelsea that she could wear the brace just 12 hours / day - but I kept her in it for nighttime/naps/ + long car rides. She is wearing it about 14 hours/day now. We have Aetna insurance and he takes that. At one point over the past year we had another insurance that he didn't take, but he was reasonable about his office visit fee. He reduced it for us. I think Dr. Feldman knows how to treat typical clubfoot very well. Chelsea's right foot was typical and we never had a problem with it. But he doesn't know how to treat atypical clubfoot. It was just her left foot that was atypical. And just be conservative about keeping the brace on - don't listen to him when he says nighttime only. I hope that helps! Guest guest
Thanks Meredith. Does Feldman admit that he doesn't treat atypical cf well? I always think that when a doctor can admit these things, they are worth working with. My baby (who is still in utero) also has a hyperflexed right knee and I am hoping that whoever ends up treating the baby can correct this as well. Is there a correlation between clubfoot and a hyperflexed knee- the baby's knee is bent forward about 45 degrees towards the head ( ouch- I know it doesn't hurt). merjill mbright@...> wrote: Hi We live in NJ too, and we see Dr. Feldman. Guest guest
Well, when we brought Chelsea back from Iowa, and he saw her feet when they were REALLY corrected, he said he conceded the point. He had been insisting that they were corrected, and that when she started walking, the crease would straighten out. But then I remember reading of another story here where he treated a baby with atypical clubfoot, and he thought it was corrected enough. So I guess he didn't really learn his lesson. But to be fair, very few Ponseti approved doctors are successfully treating atypical clubfoot. He also treated my daughter for hip dysplagia and that was resolved without any problems. If I had another baby with clubfoot, I would consider using him again. He was very gentle with Chelsea. His nurse is great. His office was very easy to work with. The drives to NY were tough. He does casting first thing in the morning at 8:30 am - he likes to have the newborns in the office before anyone else gets there so they don't get exposed to germs from the other kids. So we had to deal with rush hour traffic. Chelsea was born in January, so we had to battle the snow a few times. Also we were in Dr. Feldman's office getting x-rays when the blackout happened last summer. That was an interesting ride home. In general, I recommend him with just the caution to be vigilant about relapses. When are you due? Ouch - I haven't heard of any correlation between clubfoot and the hyperflexed knee. That doesn't sound too comfortable!
