Guest guest
When my son first started the diet he was very out of control. I cried for 2 weeks praying that it was withdrawal. He was wild, aggressive, screaming, and having nightmares. For us he definitely went through withdrawal but after the initial 2 weeks the first thing we started to notice was the way he was talking. He started to use expressive language and used it correctly. That was the first clue that I knew it was going to help him. Good luck. Guest guest
Hi everyone: I'm new to the list and just starting to remove milk as of today. My son Will, 3 has just been diagnosed with PDD/NOS. I'd love to hear any stories of how your children reacted when taken off milk. We will tackle the rest of the dairy products within a couple of weeks and then onto gluten. Any advice? thanks - janowski, Medina, NY
Guest guest
Hi - Welcome to the list. This is the best place to be when doing this diet. We have had great success with this diet and approached it like you are, first took away milk, then all milk products then wheat and then all things with gluten in it. It took awhile but it was less overwhelming that way. We are now 100% GFCF, but still have made mistakes. Most recent was not carefully reading a label and therefore not noticing " natural butter flavor " which would be BUTTER! Darn it. Oh well, the good thing about our mistakes has been that it confirms that we are doing the right thing. We always notice when Vico (our darling boy) is a bit " off " kind of spacy and tantruming more and we start to look at his food really closely, starting with whatever was the newest thing we gave him and every single time we find that we have messed up and allowed some hidden gluten or casien into his diet agian. So... we know this diet is helping him. Anyway - welcome to this list - if you haven't already done so read Karyn Seroussi, Unravelling the Mystery of Autism and PDD and , Special Diets for Special Kids (you can get both at Amazon.com) These were vital for us when learning about the diet. Visit the GFCFdiet.com web site and use their lists as your shopping list. Document what your child eats and behavior so you can figure out any other offending foods. Good luck and welcome. Guest guest
, we slowly took Evan off milk and then the rest of dairy and the slowly took away gluten. The only thing we noticed on reaction was that he was a lot more stimming for a couple of weeks. Someone mentioned once that it might be because their world is not so foggy and they are noticing more things. I must have read it over and over and then highlighted parts about products and foods so I could find it more easily when I had to look something up again. You're doing it the right way - gradually. My son will be totally GFCF this April and is doing very well. He is 6 years old and DX with autism. However he reads and is doing very well academically and verbally has really come so far in this past year. Is it the diet? Well I feel so. I had him allergy teasted and avoid all those food items, avoid all Gluten and casein, and also give LJ no preservatives, artificial colors or artificial flavors. As far as supplements it seems its a big thing with so many on this diet, but again each child is individual and I feel my son doesn't need any. I only give him a chewable multi vitamin, but I am sure many on thisa list can help you if you have any supple. questions. I get alot of good recipes on this list and I order many items from Miss Robens. You can call them at 1- and ask them to send you a catalog. Each item is coded to let you knoe if it is GF, CF, soy free, corn free, etc. and orders come in about 2 to 3 days. Well any questions just fire away as someone on here will help you all the time. Good luck to you and your little one on Long Island, New York * ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Guest guest
Hi - We actually did the gluten and dairy elimination at the same time. However, our son's interaction with us began to improve after about 2 weeks. The dietary changes have proven every effective for us and brought back to the planet Earth! And with so many different milks out there (we like potato milk the best), you should be able to find one that suits your family just fine. We actually don't drink any at all, we just use it for baking purposes. Took a few months, but the rest of the family got used to no milk in the house and we certainly don't miss it. Allergies for all of us are vastly improved and my kids are NEVER SICK any more. Perfect attendance at school, much to their disappointment!! Oh well. They will thank me later, I hope...
