Guest guest
Hi Everyone! I hope all are doing well! I am at 26 weeks and I cannot believe it. I had an ultrasound done last month and I am suppose to have a girl....however, they said that about my son til the minute he was born. I was going thru the archives and I cannot find any information on anyone that has taken the glucose test...my appointment was yesterday and she mentioned that I needed to do the blood test in 3 weeks. I explained to her that I could not do the test because of the sugar. I mentioned the fasting and she said that she was going to do some research on it. I was wondering what everyone else has gone through or have done. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Tonya
Guest guest
Tonya, I am having the fasting test on Thursday. I am 20 weeks along right now. My Dr. was pretty cooperative about it. Just insisted that I do the test one way or another though. Tricia Proud Mommy to 02/13/01 Mommy to Twin Boys EDD 08/26/
Guest guest
Hi Tonya, I am surprised that you werew unable to find any info on the glucose tolerance test in the archives. It's been a hot topic in here for weeks!! Anyway, some people have great OB's who understand their special circumstances and work with them in doing an alternative test. Others and me included, don't have OB's who are willing to help them or get educated on post op RNYers. My OB insisted on me doing the regular one hour GTT. My PCP did her best to plead my case, she knew that this was out of question for me to take the regular test. But, they did not listen to her advice. I read up about gestational diabetes online, weighed my options and decided I would just have to try and do it. Last Saturday I took the test, I was really nauseated for several hours, forced myself not to throw up. I haven't heard anything from my OB, so I am assuming my results are normal. It sounds like to me, that your OB is willing to at least educate herself to your special needs and to work with you instead of against you. It can only help her in the long run. I am sure you won't be her only patient who is post op gastric bypass. I wish the best for you and your knew baby girl...that's what they way we are having too...I am having another ultrasound Monday. I am going to have them double check that she's still a girl!! Guest guest
With my post RNY pregnancy my Perinatalogist did not want me to drink the Glucola drink. It has 50 grams of sugar. Instead, he had me fast overnight, come in, in the early am for a blood test. I was then instructed to get something to eat and come back in an hour and get another bloodtest. That worked well for me. Open RNY 2-18-02 359/138 1-16-03 andra Marie (born still at 36 weeks on 3-14-98, following a car accident)
Guest guest
Tonya, I did it, I didn't want to but I agreed to try. I went in and they had it very cold for me. I explained to the people in the lab that it was possible I would become very sick after drinking it. They told me to take it slow but I had to finish it in 5 minutes. I turned white and started to sweat after 2 sips, the women in the lab took me in a back room and had me sit in a recliner with my feet up and covered me with a blanket and turned the lights off. I know this is the only reason I was able to keep it in. I fought vomiting for the whole hour but I was able to have the blood test at the end, then went home and had diarrhea and felt sick for a few hours later. Now was it worth it? I don't think so, I would have been happy to track my blood sugar with a machine for diabetics for the remainder of my pregnancy instead. My test came out normal. Does that mean that the test is correct with our absorbtion problems? I don't think it can be completely accurate. Just my opinion. Good luck making your decision. Guest guest
Alvarado's website has a link regarding pregnancy. It states specifically that the glucose test IS NOT accurate for gastric bypass patients. In addition to maybe making us violently ill, it doesn't yield proper results. Why risk it? mailto: dferguson@... BTC, Columbus, 10/7/
Guest guest
My ob/gyn has been wonderfully understanding about this, maybe because he's post RNY pregnancy experienced. He told me there were other things to look for like rapid, unexplained weight gain between appointments, visual problems, dizziness, and others that I can't remember. He doesn't do the glucose drink test anyway. Says he'd never drink the stuff himself so he can't imagine asking his patients to do something he wouldn't be willing to do. He does the jelly bean test, having his patients eat 19 jellybeans. Sound more palitable to me, lol. I do wonder, and it might be worth asking your ob/gyn and/or WLS surgeon... since part of our post surgery dumping involves a rapid increase in insulin, wouldn't our test results have a strong chance of coming back with a false or inconclusive answer? Good luck, and it sounds like you've got a good doc that is willing to work with your special circumstances. Guest guest
How do I access their web site so that I can get this info for my ob? I have not discussed it with them yet, but I will refuse to take the " normal " GTT. Thanks Alvarado's website has a link regarding pregnancy. Guest guest
Here's a link to our Yahoogroups home page: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/OSSG-pregnant/ There are a couple of good links there in the Description section that you might want to check out before you head to your OB/GYN for the first time. Never hurts to show up prepared... -Kris, ListMom (now proudly sporting a pierced tragus) (no, I'm not the typical minister's wife) (hehe)

Guest guest
www.gastricbypass.com is the web address. When you get their click on benefits & risks on the side of the page and scroll down until you come to the section on Pregnancy (below): a.. Pregnancy OK, so it's not exactly our fault, but it happens often enough to give a special warning. Many severely overweight women are also infertile, because the fatty tissue soaks up the normal hormones, and makes some of its own as well, completely confusing the ovaries and uterus, and causing a lack of ovulation. As weight loss occurs, this situation may change quickly. We believe it is important to avoid conception during the phase of rapid weight loss - about one year after surgery - to maintain adequate nutrition. This requires special attention to contraception, even by those who think that it can't happen, because " natural " infertility may not last - in fact, it can go away in one night. Once weight loss is complete, and nutrition is stabilized, pregnancy is not likely to cause any problems, and will probably be safer than it would be than when obese. We have studied this, and our findings are reported. For a copy of this paper, click HERE. Pregnancy Following Gastric Bypass for Morbid Obesity. Wittgrove AC, Jester L, Wittgrove P & GW. Obesity Surgery 8, 1998:461-464. Copyright F-D Communications, Inc. Published by permission. Many obstetricians believe that bariatric surgery increases the nutritional and metabolic risk of subsequent pregnancy. We believe that this belief is incorrect, and that pregnancy can be safely undertaken, once a stable post-operative weight has been achieved, 12 to 18 months post-operatively. Although several patients have conceived within that period, and have borne healthy children, we strongly counsel against pregnancy during the first 12 to 18 months after surgery, due to the potential for nutritional stress, and for adverse effects on the fetus. We undertook this study to prove our hypothesis, that pregnancy could be undertaken safely, and good nutrition of mother and child could be maintained. Some important points from this study: a.. Glucose Tolerance Testing should not be performed. The test is potentially dangerous after GBP, and the results are uninterpretable and useless. b.. Average Weight Gain with Pregnancy was much less, and weight was usually lost within 5 weeks after delivery. c.. Baby Weights were less, and in a healthy weight range. d.. Use of Vitamin and Mineral supplements is very important. e.. Nutritional deficiencies can be avoided with good medical and pre-natal care. This article requires Acrobat Reader for viewing. Guest guest
Hi Tonya, I have had 5 miscarriages and my fertility doc highly recommended me having the 6 hour Glucose Tolerance Test. I pleaded with her to not have to do the test due to dumping, but she felt it was that important. Needless to say, I had to be carried out of the office after the 6 hour ordeal. I was a wreck and had to take the following day off from work. I felt so sick and weak. Fortunately, the testing was not for nothing as I did end up having Insulin resistence and was put on Glucophage. I am now pg for the 6th time and at 7 weeks along. 7 weeks is the longest I have ever made it in any of my pregnancies, so if this works, it will have well been worth the agony. Not sure if this helps, but thought I should give my story for anyone else who might need to know. Ronnie Ft Worth, TX > > Hi Everyone! > > > > I hope all are doing well!
