How important is it to avoid things which are not ingested, such as soap,

shampoo, lotion, playdough, etc.? It thought that I read somewhere that

there is little evidence that these items are absorbed into the blood

stream. Have your kids had reactions when exposed to non-food items?

Yes, we've had transdermal gluten reactions. And why not, think

about hormone & nicotine patches. These reactions have happened with

wheat paste and wheat hair products (at the hair salon). I wouldn't

have noticed the reaction in the early gfcf days, but it's clear

now. Ian won't even walk into a room if someone's working with flour

b/c he says he knows right away from a funny feeling in his nose.

Likewise now for haircuts, he sits away from everyone else, and his

stylist tells people not to use the wheat products until he leaves -

the reaction is that obvious.

Initially, I didn't want to even think about the nonfood gluten

issue - just doing the diet was confusing enough. But now I'm greedy

for every possible improvement.

Oh yes . Playdoh, wheat paste and stickers ( some) are defineitely culprits.

I always had trouble when he used them. What is weird is he was trying to

eat the play doh when we first withdrew all the regular foods. He even asked

for playdoh by name and he hardly ever spoke then. He must have wanted it

bad. This was before I even realized that playdoh had gluten and the teachers

at school said that was all he ever wanted to play with. As soon as I

realized it I made some gluten free/homemade kind .
