Guest guest
Dolores, I guess my brother would not be much of a help. He is short and I am not sure how well he could help if you started to fall. One thing I did think of but I am not sure if it is available, is a home health nurse that could help you. I am working a temp job adding health care providers and noticed that in quite a few cases the insurance plans pay for home health nurses to help a patient. I don't actually process the claims, just get the providers tax id numbers and addresses but we process for many plans, blue cross blue shield, american health group, and many others. Maybe your current insurance would pay for such a person. I am not sure if medicare will or not. Janet Sample Re: Re: Dolores KU I'm in Topeka, KS and KU is in Kansas City. That is where an MDA clinic is, so I am told. With me not getting around good and tiring easily I would need a " nurse " of some sorts to get me around the hospital and they don't rovide some-such-things. Just about everyone I know who doesn't have a family and works full-time + and anyone else is my age and don't get around much better thatn I do. My one friend just fell on the steps to her apt and is still having a hard time getting around. As for the " sores " or whatever they are I have always had a difficult healing even after surgery, there were times when my incision would just start to open up after as much as a week later. The place on my arm is where I cut a corner too short turning from the living area into the hallway and thought it was just going to be one of those nasty looking little red blotches (sort of like a large blood blister) that eventually just turns into a brown " age/liver spot " then the next thing I knew I had a bloody looking spot on my shirt sleeve and there was this sort of " gunky " blood oozing out of this place on my arm. So far it isn't getting any bigger than in the beginning but it sort of burns like a skined knee. The place on my leg still only has two raw " icky " looking places and I just hope they don't break open again as I am very tired of it not healing. They don't itch they just burn ir sting?? My son drives to kansas City every day but he told me to make a backup appt at Springfield as that is probably where we would end up. He simply takes the interstate to his turnoff and goes to the Argentine Yards to show up and they transport them to and from the area where the tracks are in ill repair. Guest guest
I don't think Cigna will take care of anything like that and the rest of this year EDS (Fiscal Agent for KS Medicaid) is kindly allowing me to be classified as a " Non-working " employee so I can be eligible for " company benefits " which is my Cigna Insurance (which EDS pays a portion) my 401K and additional retirement, as I am a retired EDS employee. As of 2006 I HAVE to go on Medicare whether I want to or not, I am 69 so I should have been on Medicare long ago but have managed to stay with a group plan instead. About the only thing I am eligible for thru ee County Home Health is a Home Health Aide comes on Thursdays, runs the vacuum while I take a bath, and makes my bed for me. I have my sheets already washed and in the dryer by the time she gets here at 7:15 and it only costs me $8.40 per week. I can inquire of my case manager at Dept of Aging or the RN in charge of my case. Heck, anything is worth a try and thanks for the idea as I sure would never have thought of anything like that. Thanks so much and I'll let you know what I find out. Dolores Janet Sample thesamples@...> wrote:Dolores, I guess my brother would not be much of a help. Guest guest
Doris, Yes anything is worth a try. I only know one person there who handles claims well enough to ask them about Cigna. She is off till I think next week sometime though. I do not have access to all the plans and networks and stuff, only see them occasionally but I can try to see if Cigna is one of the plans we process for. Guest guest
Delores If you are getting services through the senior services program for your cleaning and bed changing, you should be able to get a volunteer to take you to an appointment and stay with you while there. I know this is available in this area. Another idea would be to have a high school or college student who needs to provide community service go with you. laurie > Doris, > > Yes anything is worth a try. Guest guest
Thanks so much for all your help and ideas. If you find out anything let me know and in the meantime I'll try to find out what I can thru KDOA so I'll have all my facts together when I see my neuro in August. It's so wonderful to have all of you out there with the info each of you have to be able to assist the rest of us. Thanks again to all of you, I don't feel so all alone with all of you at my fingertips. My Grandson was so right when he insisted I get the computer. It has really made a difference in a lot of ways. Guest guest
St. Francis hospital had a van to transport mainly cancer patients (I think) from outlying areas and even trassportated my husband during his first round of chemo, but then they said it was too costly and quit even for the outlying areas, so there is no transportation services offered any longer. I even have to pay to get transportation for out-patient serices, but good thought, keep a;; ideaas coming as one might work out. Thanks a bunch, Dolores ohgminion rakshasis@...> wrote:Our local hospital has volunteers to take people to appointments, no charge to the patient. Guest guest
At one time they did have Stormont School of Nursing, but that has gone by the wayside and most training is done at Vo-tech or 's where you learn everything from being a travel agent to nursng school? I know that both MDA and UMDF have told me their clinics are both thru KU Med Ctr. I have ruled out Home Health but I am still going to give Dept of Aging a call. Who knows, but keep the ideas coming, all are welcome as we might just hit on something yet. Guest guest
I think I just got this answered, but checkfor sure. I have a friend a Holton that works at a nursing facility and her time off is valuable to her to be with ther grandchildren (which I can fully understand). She lost a grandaughter to Aplastic Anemia several years ago and she is kind enough to take care of my greataunt's gravesite for me at Netawaka, KS where both her grandaughter and my greataunt are buried. She is the only one that I know of that knows her way to and around KU as her grandaught was there so many, many times when her grandaughter was ill but that is approx 70 miles roundtrip just to and fro Holton without counting approx 75 miles to KC proper not counting getting to KU. I have even inquired about bus service, I would have to take a cab from where the bus station is to KU, so ??? Thanks and keep thinnking as one of you might just hit on something that will work. Dolores ohgminion rakshasis@...> wrote:I think contacting a volunteer organization in your neighborhood might help you find other sources for rides. There is a self-help clearinghouse that a friend of ours used to work for, but I think it was local to our state. Could you call the United Way in your area, or the volunteer center at your local hospital? They might point you in the right direction. We have " rural transportation " in our area, which is heavily discounted for people with disabilities - they'll go right to your door. Unfortunately, if you need to go out of county, they'd have to bring you to a bus stop for further travel. Take care, RH Dolores, > > > > > > I guess my brother would not be much of a help.
