Guest guest
Josh: Some possible resources for such information might be Legal Momentum's Immigrant Women Program http://www.legalmomentum.org/issues/imm/index.shtml and the National Lawyers Guild National Immigration Project http://www.nationalimmigrationproject.org/. Both have done work in the area of domestic violence and immigrants and may also be dealing with sexual harrassment. There were also several organizations cited in the " Green Motel " article. I know of the recent " Green Motel " article in MS Magazine, but other than that I have not found anything. I am hoping some of you may know of other resources. Thanks. Guest guest
A number of organizations are working on the issue of sexual harassment of farmworker women, including FJF, the EEOC and California Rural Legal Aid. I'm not sure exactly what resources you are looking for. EEOC has put out seeral excellent brochures which can be distributed to farmworker women which briefly describe their rights. I have also given several presentations on this subject and can answer questions. Several legal aid groups are also available to represent women in these circumstances. Organizacion en California de Lideres Campesinas has also provided emotional and social support to women seeking to enforce these rights. In sum, please let me know if you need any specific assistance and I can point you in the right direction. -- Deputy Director Farmworker Justice Fund, Inc. 1010 Vermont Avenue N.W. Guest guest
Hello; I work with the migrant families and Out Of School Youths in our district at Gilroy, CA. I was approached by a couple of migrant ladies who work for a large company that process garlic in Gilroy. These two ladies were sexually harassed by two supervisors, the ladies did file a report against the gentlemen but nothing was done. Instead the ladies quit their job and life continues on at the garlic plant with these two gentlemen harassing other women. Can someone guide me to how to begin to defend these women, how women can defend themselves by these abusive tacties, how to bring this issue out and bring justice to where it belongs. Please help me out. Guest guest
Sexual harassment is illegal and should be addressed through legal channels - once the company involved has failed to take corrective action. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has been very aggressive in taking on this type of case. They have successfully prosecuted several such actions on behalf of farmworker women and gotten the women large compensatory recoveries. You can start the process in one of 2 ways: 1) contact EEOC and file a charge or 2) contact a lawyer and get the lawyer to help. In this instance, there is an office of the California Rural Legal Assistance in Gilroy (ph 408-847-1408) and they would most likely assist the women. Sexual harassment is a big probelm in agriculture. Many women feel too ashamed to come forward. Women who are victimized by this conduct will probably need suport from a community group or others. The only way to fight this behavior is to address it directly. There are good legal tools here to use. If anyone wants additional help with this, please feel free to call me directly.
