Guest guest
, It totally depends on your particular surgery. Some people can swallow the prenatal vits with no problem, and some can't. I had the silastic ring vertical gastroplasty (no bypass) and it was physically impossible for the normal prenatal vits to go through my tiny little ring. I was able to switch to the two-a-day kind called " Natalins " which are half the size, and they went through without any trouble. Others may not have a silastic ring, but still can't tolerate normal prenatal vits... in those cases, there are other ways of getting around the problem. Since you're not yet pregnant, why not try taking a folic acid supplement along with your regular Flintstones? You can get those over-the-counter and lots of doctors recommend those for women who are of childbearing age anyway. -Kris ======================================== on 4/30/04 7:36 PM, gnrnickell at grentry@... wrote: Hey all, Can we swallow OTC Pre-natal vitamins and how many should we take since we had gastric bypass? If we can't take regular prenatal vitamins, can anyone tell me what the best kind of vitamins to take are? Right now I take 2 chewable Flinstone w/iron vitamins. I am not pregnant, but would like to start taking prenatal vitamins to prepare my body. Thanks,
Guest guest
-Hi .... The vitamin question is one that I have struggled with too...Post op, I was on two Flintstones as well. When I got pregnant, was put on the prenatals too. I wrote to the board with the exact same question you did, and everyone it seemed had a different experience. The bottom line was that every Dr had his own way of doing things - I checked with both my surgeon and my regular physician about the vitamins. I have found a really awesome prenatal vitamin...It is called " Preg Vit " and you actually take one smaller pill in the am and one in the pm. They separate the iron and calcium as Ca isn't as well absorbed in the presence of iron. Other advantages to these vitamins: They come in an easy blister pack with the days on them, so easy to see if you have forgotten one...also with the blister pack, no nauseating revolting smell of vitamins...they are smaller than traditional prenatal pills and because they are prescription, they are covered by alot of prescription plans. I had planned to take the Preg Vit and the Flintstones (reason being the flintstones for my needs and prenatal for baby's), but had a desparate constipation issue....I believe it is because of all the iron I was consuming. I have been off the flintstones for a couple of weeks now and my bloodwork is fine...and thankfully the bowels are somewhat better too..lol.. Hope this info helps and best of luck to you in your conception quest! VBG May 6/03 -104lb in 9 mos...now 3 mos pregnant. Guest guest
I don't think you need to start any prenatals since you are taking the 2 flinstones but you should be getting 800 mcg of folic acid in. It helps to prevent some birth defects. When you do conceive the doc can prescribe you chewable prenatals Yes, they really have them, lol) but i take the regular kind. i also continue to take my daily multi and my b-12 and calcium too along with the prenatal. Guest guest
I have taken OTC prenatals. Take one until you can talk to your surgeon. The reason being, some vites are dangerous/toxic if you get too much of them. It depends on how far out you are, how much you had bypassed and how adaptable you are with how much you are getting. mailto: dferguson@... Guest guest
I got pg at only 7 weeks post-op. So, I was on my 2 Flinstones a day obviously. I tried to start taking a chewable pre-natal vitamin to no avail. My excessive morining sickness would not allow me to keep them down. So, I went back to 2 Flinstones every day and every other day I took 3 Flinstones. I did also take 2 Tums a day for calcium, but some days I couldn't get those down because of my morning sickness. I will be TTC at the end of the summer and I have discussed with my OB that I plan to take my Flinstones for now, but will switch to a Pre-natal at that time. My OB is prefectly happy with tha. But nontheless, that is what I did, and I delivered an beautiful healthy baby. Good luck and Best Wishes!
