You are describing the AFO's. So can I ask why your doctor prescribed the

AFO's instead of the DBB? AFO's are not part of the Ponseti protocol and

the feet don't stay in the correct outward rotation needed to keep the

feet from relapsing.

I raise concern to you because my daughter also had the AFO's and she

starting relapsing and then she had to go back in casts and have another

tenotomy. Please be aware and maybe let us know which doctor you are

seeing. I bet someone on this site can send you a link about the AFO's so

you can read more about it.

I hope I didn't startle you, just want you to know.

Welcome to our group!

I'm sure you've read the posts about the AFOs and the information on

the components that make up the FAB (shoes with bar).

If there's anything that we can do to help you or answer questions

on this, please ask.

About the muscle wastage, an AFO or KAFO will promote atrophy in the

calf muscle. This is not the case with the FAB (also called DBB).

I am not sure if your daughter has one or both legs affected by

clubfoot, but typically, the calf muscle will be smaller in the leg

affected by clubfoot. This is not due to atrophy, it is because the

genetic makeup of the muscle tissue is different in a clubfoot leg.

The muscle will never be able to be " bulked up " to equal that in

a " normal leg " . Some people who have clubfoot have extremely thin

calves and others are hardly noticeable. The severity varies from

case to case.

Your daughter's calf/calves could be thin (but not necessarily weak)

even without additional problems caused by muscle atrophy.

My daughter has unilateral (left) clubfoot and her calf muscle is

thinner on her left leg, however, that leg is not weaker than the

other- she has no problems due to the thin calf.

I hope this helps!

Hi,

I wonder why your doctor doesn't have you baby in Markel shoes and bar.

There is no muscle " wasting " with the shoes and bar as there would be with

an AFO. In addition, numerous people have attested to the fact that the AFO

does not hold the correction obtained with casting.

Hello everybody!

My little one is 3 month old and after a serie of casts she has

splints fitted. They are plastic custom made and are looking as open

front boots mid hip high on three velcro each.Have you ever come

across the ones like this ? May be you have an idea why there is no

bar joining the legs in this design?

And do you have an idea what can be done to prevent muscle wastage? I

was told it was anavoidable. Thanks.

the leters left from the time we lived in Argentina.:)

We had been in casts for 3 month changed once a week or once a fortnight. Her

feet were pointing outwards after it as on photos at this board. Then the baby

had a tenotomy and these splints.

That is basically.

I agree, the DBB does not interfere with muscle development at all.
