Hello all. I haven't been around much, but I just read some posts on

constipation. And I know this is a buring issues with a lot of us to

try to help our kids. First of all, Jenyfer, it seems that miralax

has been a miracle for a lot of the kids. As a matter of fact

has been prescribed Miralax, but I don't give it to him regularly.

And, that is the main reason I am posting now.

Here is my question:

Even though seems to be having success with BM's on his own,

should I keep giving him the miralax? I mean, is it possible that by

keeping the miralax in him and ongoing that he may do better as far

as the gagging and spitting up? Sometimes, he just seems so darn

FULL and gags constantly. Other days are good. Most days,

will have one decent bowel movement, but also he will have little

smears in his diaper several times a day. Could this be a sign that

he isn't getting it all out. I am sorry if this grosses any of you

out, but I would really like to do what is best for him, and if that

means giving him the miralax daily, then I want to do that. I know I

have read onhere before that some of your kids were successfull with

BM's but apparently were still constipated. Salem, isn't

your daughter one of these kids? Any information or suggestions

would be so appreciated. Thank you all for being there for us! I

don't know what I would do without you all!

Thanx,

Jodi R.

Hi Jodi, thanks for the post! it's nice just to know that other

people are going through all of this too (not that i wish it was

that way!)

As for the constipation issue i'm an old hand at that. We've been

fighting Olivia's constipation since she was 2 days old and we're

now 4+ years into it. Her constipation resulted in a Mega Colon

which means that her bowel is 2X the size it should be and her

rectum is 3x the size it should be. Without meds she only poops

about every 7-10 days resulting in a softball size poop with lots of

tearing and bleeding. Anyway this is what the dr. explained to us.

When the bowel gets to full but you are constipated it stretches out

in order to accomidate (sp) more poop. Since the bowel is a muscle,

when it gets stretched, it get's out of shape and there for

can't " flex " and make the poop come out. When there's " leaking "

(stains in the diaper or little bean poops) it means that a bit of

the constipated poop has worked it's way to the rectum and is

sitting there now stretching the rectum out of shape. It is

imperative that the bowel is completly emptied every day to keep it

the regular size. Olivia's now on 2 meds to keep her poop hydrated

so it's not hard and a " pusher " to help get it out (both are non

habit forming) We also have a strict poop schedule which gives her

36 hours to have a poop on her own, if she doesn't she gets a

suppository and if there's any " leaking " it's an automatic enema.

I hope this didn't get to confusing and that it might help you

decide weather or not to do the daily meds.

Have a great day, and thanks again!!

Everyone -- don't read this if you have a queezy stomach.

I just came from the Adult GI doctor -- I have ALSO been using

Miralax for about 6 months now, after seeing helped so

much. So I can personally tell you what it is like.

Without Miralax (I ran out last week and went 5 days without it and

BAM, problems came back that fast), I still had BMs every day -- but

often hard, and not very much. My stomach would often hurt, feel

very full, get small sharp pains down low. Also, my stomach would

feel bloated, a type of full feeling, and my appetite was definitely

less (hmmm, be constipated and lose weight??). HA!

When I am on Miralax, and this is the gross part, so skip this if

you can't handle it -- my BMs literally are EVERY morning, and it

can be 8-10 inches long!!!! So all I keep thinking is that when I

am off Miralax, and all I go is " plop, plop, plop " all that BM is

sitting in my intestines.

The adult GI explained that when all that BM sits in your

intestines, it can also be unhealthy for your intestines (why some

people love colonics). Miralax not only acts as a very slow acting

laxative, but it also heals the intestine.

Now, that being said, 's own GI doctor did tell me that we

could move to every other day on the Miralax if we wanted, and see

what happens. I haven't tried it yet, because I tried it on myself,

and I immediately got constipated again. Mind you, I drink more

than 64 ounces of water a day, eat lots of fiber, and exercise at

least 3 times a week - so blow all those theories on constipation.
