Guest guest
Hi everyone My daughter Maddison is 3. We feed her a meal every three hours and a snack in between. The last time we saw a nutritionist was probably when she was 1. They are the ones who told us to feed her this was. She doesn't seem to have a problem with hypoglycemia eating like this. My concern has always been that we feed her too often. I seems like she doesn't have a chance to get hungry. What does anyone else do or think. I know of they blood sugar issues. And she doesn't seem to have ever had a problem with slow stomach empting. Help. I plan to talk to her gastro in april. I just want some in put from the professionals!!! Guest guest
Hi melissa!! my son christopher is also 3 and this is how we've always fed him as well. he has also seemed to be able to stay away from the bs problems by eating this way as well. i dont feel that he is being overfed since he will only eat as much as he can at those meals. hope this helps and maybe someone else will have some thing else to add about this either way. jodie (nicholas-5 nonrss, christopher-3 rss 23lbs 33 " ght genotropin .6, johnathon-9m nonrss) > Hi everyone > My daughter Maddison is 3. Guest guest
Hi Sabina, I hope it's okay if I butt in here... I'm an RSS adult. My mom swears she fed me every 2-3 hours 'round the clock for the first few years of my life. I don't know how she managed, and she still blames ME that she can't sleep through the night now (*grin*), but I really do think the frequent feedings prevented severe hypoglycemia issues. Oh, and I'm sure I never ate a lot during any of those feedings, either. In fact, my parents still call me a " nibbler " -- I never eat a lot at any one meal, but people who've watched me eat all day are often shocked at how much I can put away in a day now! hehe! hope this helps, -Ana (26 years old, RSS) > > Hi and Jodie > Do you also feed your kids every 3 hrs during the night? > Sabina
Guest guest
- This is a hotly debated topic. What I have learned that we now put forth via MAGIC is the following: It is recommended that you stick to your 3 main family meals -- that your child not have meals different from you. However, your child should also have frequent snacks in between the meals, but not more than 60 minutes prior to a meal. The snack just prior to the meal should also not be high in sugar. For example Breakfast 8am Snack 9:30am Snack 11am Lunch 12:00-12:30 Snack 1:30 Snack 3:30 Snack 4:30 Dinner 6:00pm You want your child to learn normal eating habits, but the fact is that ALL children under the age of 4 or so, should be snacking frequently, even without RSS. This is the nature of their fast metabolism bodies. You can't feed your child too often -- you can feed them too much at the wrong times, which will impact their ability to eat a regular meal. So a snack for a child might be a cheesestick. And then an hour later, a small bowl of goldfish. Hope this makes sense for you. Salem > Hi everyone > My daughter Maddison is 3. Guest guest
hi , We went regularly to both a feeding therapist and a nutritionist with Willie prior to his recent RSS diagnosis. They told me among other things not to feed him at night, to " play hardball " and not let him have anything between the scheduled meals nd snacks, to feed him in front of the TV, to bounce him on a therapy ball before dinner, to feed him separately from the rest of the family, to feed him always in the same place. With 2 boys 2 years apart and all the stress of a child who isn;t eating, this was all impossible. The four months I stuck to their advice were the worst ever. He gained 2 ounces in 4 months. I went in to see the nutritionist w/ a limp, pale child (Debbie-they didn't think of hypoglycemia then either!) and she showed us photos of feeding tubes . (In front of Willie who held onto his stomach shaking his head NO the whole drive home while I sobbed). Anyhow, I got home , unplugged the TV, fed him when he asked and cut out all the therapy that was driving us all insane (when you are bouncing your child on a therapy ball until dinner , who is making dinner? Where do you put the other child?) The next month he gained one pound. Anyhow, although RSS was suspected, they didn't seem to really understand any of it. It was such a relief when we say Dr H and she said " just feed him when he's hungry. Every time he asks. Phew. " Good luck to you. I'm sure there are great nutritionists in this arena, but you likely know best. Kathy (Willie 3 yrs old RSS and Jack 5 yrs non RSS)
Guest guest
, When I first read your message, I thought " Well, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. " You are obviously doing well and Maddison is thriving and also doing well. It might help to know that even at approaching 16, Max is a grazer. He will eat breakfast, lunch and dinner, but he snacks between meals and just cannot make it from breakfast until lunch and lunch to dinner without them. We even have something in his IEP at school so he can snack during classes. What wrote about the types of foods and the frequency is so true. That makes a big difference, but it seems like you are doing that anyway without even realizing it. I have worried about Max doing this and going beyond that 25% weight for height, but at the last visit she told Max to EAT because he had not gained weight and therefore did not grow. Now Max is obsessing and weighing himself every day and has decided he needs to slow down because he is a whopping 103 pounds! I don't think I even saw that number growing up! (We have to monitor Max for OCD and his weight because he will make himself crazy, just like an anorexic if not reassured and watched.) So, I think you are doing the right thing. Good luck. Guest guest
hi melissa!! christopher usually can go the night without eating something (sometimes he will wake up and want a cookie and a drink) but most of the time he can make it through. he has a snack before going to bed which i think helps. jodie (nicholas-5 nonrss, christopher-3 rss 23lbs 33 " ght genotropin .6, johnathon-9m nonrss)-

Guest guest
Hi Thanks for the reply. Its makes sense. Our biggest problem is we still have to feed her everything ourself. She will eat on her own but as far as her eating a whole meal by herself she will not. Even with snacks you have to constantly remind her eat, take a bite. She is on periactin and has been for almost 2 years. But I don't know how she will ever go to school like this????????? I worry about it a lot. > > Hi everyone > > My daughter Maddison is 3. Guest guest
I haven't experienced the feeding problems you have but I will tell you that our common fear that keeps us awake at night " how will they ever go to school? " always goes away and solves itself. I remember my non RSS daughter before she started school (my oldest, she's almost 15 now) I was so concerned because she was still not independent at wiping herself after a BM and I thought " my God what will happen? " I remember her kindergarten teacher telling me that it had never been an issue (most kids apparently don't go at school). Sure enough, it wasn't a problem. On another front, my sister's little boy has had on going problems with his BM's (common theme?? LOL) and was in diapers right up until June of the year before he started school (that was last year). My sister was hysterical thinking of her son being made fun of because he was still in diapers. (he couldn't control when he would have a BM so he had diapers). You know what? Over that summer, he progressed rapidly and off he went, that Sept., in his underwear to school and has been fine. Try not to worry, kids are amazing and will shock you with the rapid change of their development. Just when you think things are going to like that forever, they wake up one morning and it's a different story all together. Debby Re: feeding too often > Hi > Thanks for the reply. Its makes sense.
