Guest guest
I'm not sure if I saw something on this site or the other clubfoot group about babies being tongue tied. Can anyone confirm this? I looked through the archives but came up with nothing. I am wondering if it is at all associated with clubfoot. My baby is having a hard time with breastfeeding and I am wondering if this may be the reason. Thanks, Caroline
Guest guest
I don't think there is a direct relation between the tongue and the feet but my son Everett was tongue tied as an infant and cause serious feeding issues. Can your baby stick his tongue out past his teeth or lips? Do you notice a definate crease down the middle of his tongue when he tries to stick it out? This is how we noticed his. It's really easy to fix and I urge you to find a dr. who will snip it for him asap. A five minute office procedure fixed Everett and his eating took off in leaps and bounds immediately afterwards. s. tongue tied I'm not sure if I saw something on this site or the other clubfoot group about babies being tongue tied. Guest guest
Caroline, You're right; there have been discussions about this on the board in the past- it's not related to clubfoot, but it's a common problem so we often have it come up in the " newborn discussions " . The most recent threads I could find on it start at msg# 27271 and 27305. There are older ones also. FYI- to search through the archives, you have to keep hitting the " next " button to search through the messages small batches at a time from most recent to oldest. Unfortunately, it won't search through the whole archive from day one all at once anymore. HTH and hope you get your feeding issues resolved!!!! & (3-16-00) left clubfoot > > > I'm not sure if I saw something on this site or the other clubfoot > group about babies being tongue tied. Guest guest
Caroline, I have not done any research, but wanted to tell you that Cole (BL Clubfeet) is slightly tongue tied and may need to have his tongue clipped if it effects his speech. The lactation specialist pointed this out when I was having trouble with breastfeeding. Guest guest
Why are you waiting to see if it affects his speech? By then, if it does affect his speech, he will have learned how to use a defective tongue and will have to re-learn a lot of his speech making abilities....just a thought. s. Guest guest
Well I'm not coming down on you - obviously it's your choice and your situation. I had a step son with my ex-husband, and step daughter with my current husband - both children were tongue tied and ended up with major speech impediments in grade school requireing lots of therapy and the procedure done anyway. Everett's tongue was pretty severe, it wouldn't pass beyond his bottom teeth. IT was a swift little clip and he ate immediately afterwards. There's very little to having it clipped and the mouth heals so fast - so if it ends up happening later on, just know it's a very minor procedure. Less than the tenotomy! s. Guest guest
He is not having any trouble eating, saying da, ma ma, ba, or taking a sippy cup. He may not have to have it clipped. I am going on my pediatrician's advice and will not have my son's tongue cut if it is not necessary. He can stick it out beyond his teeth and my doctor says she sees this all the time, some cases worse than others. I would say each child is different and I refuse to have his tongue clipped if my doctors are not recommending this type of treatment (yes I have had more than one opinion). Guest guest
I have heard that massage can loosen it up. Actually, I've heard that with massage, eventually it just breaks painlessly or something like that. I would imagine, that if the child is able to nurse that clipping wouldn't be as necessary as with a child who had problems nursing. Guest guest
My son is also tongue-tied; however, he has not had feeding problems and my ped. also told us to wait and see because it can correct itself. is able to stick his tongue out of his mouth. I am sure there are different degrees of tongue-tied. We plan to watch him and see how he is doing. Guest guest
Hi there, I am just catching up on the posts from the last couple of days and came across these conversations about tongue tie. I am a certified speech/language pathologist. First of all, there are many speech/language pathologists that are trained in infant feeding. If you are concerned regarding feeding or speech issues for that matter I would ask your pediatrician to refer you for a consultation with a licensed speech therapist. If the child is older and there are speech concerns, one of the things we look for is if the child is able to produce sounds on their alveolar ridge (right behind teeth) such as t,d,n,l,s. If you have any other questions in this area, I would be happy to answer them!
